Automatically? No, but there is a very useful facility to "Align Audio Objects".
So , assuming your camera records audio as well as video, place its file on two tracks (make sure you have set MEP to show a separate audio track), place your other audio on a different but parallel track and use the above command on the camera audio to align the two recordings.
You say your separate audio recording is synchronised with your camera, but remember that MEP cannot read the sync pulses so will see the two audio files as independent of each other. If your recording lasts for anything more than a few minutes there is a possibility that perfect sync will be lost.
In that case, you are in to an altogether different ball-game! If you need further help because sync is not maintained throughout the video, post back. There is a solution, but it isn't cheap!
I think that the possibility is only available in the Plus/Premium version. Do you have either of these?
With the video and external audio tracks one below the other, right-click on the audio track, and select align other audio objects to this track. Follow the instructions.
If you don't see this option, then you likely don't have Plus or Premium.
You can take a look at my Multi-cam tutorial in which I show how to align the files using this command.
Sorry I didn't reply to your answers before now only I have been trying things out syncing audio to video.
I have MMEP 2015 Premium which has what you say but I really don't find this satisfactory. So what is the exspensive alternativeyou speak about? I am recording with a shotgun mic plugged into a tascam DR 100 m11 digital recorder, the output from that is plugged into my camcorder so I do have a reference track to work with when I'm trying to sync the audio from the Tascan recorder into MMEP, but it's to long winded if you know what I mean
