Recording sound over video in MEP2014 - problem with "Play while recording"

browj2 wrote on 1/31/2014, 6:40 PM

I have been struggling with this and thought it was me. I am trying to record/dub audio onto the video and see the video play at the same time. In the Audio recording dialog, I have checked "Play while recording." When I record, the playback marker moves as requested, but nothing changes on the screen. To make it simple, I put 6 photos on the timeline and started at the beginning. When the marker gets to the second image, etc., I still see only the first image.

I tried the same thing and 2013 and it works perfectly.

I tried a short video clip in 2014, and the marker moved but the video remained static with the first image. The video moves a few frames only. If I leave the audio on, I can monitor it while I record, but the screen images are fixed.

I had no problem with the same video clip in 2013 and was able to record and see the image move simultaneously.

Can anyone else reproduce this? If so, we have a bug.

MEP 2014 - 13.0.2.8

MEP 2013 - 12.0.3.4

Thanks,

Yes it is a bug, like many others as well in VdL 2014. Shame on this version

Workaround: Change Audiodriver from "Wave" to "Direct Sound"

Workaround works fine. I wish I had known about this a week ago. I should have asked earlier. I would never have found a solution. The wave driver works fine in 2013.

Makes one wonder just what were the improvements in 2014 to make one want to upgrade.

Thank you kindly,

I record narrative on all my videos but have never used the 'Play while record' option, so have never spotted this one.

Anyone submitted a formal ticketed report to Technical Support?

I did not submit a ticket.

But as this bug was dicussed already months ago, I would really do hope that somebody at Magix is reading here as well.

Extract from reply I received from MAGIX Support:

"We reported this quite a while ago and I believe this is probably already fixed by now, but wasn't included in any available update yet. We currently have this on our support wishlist for fixes to be included with the next update."

Hi Terry,

Thanks for the update.

I purchased the Pixelan effects and transitions and am having fun trying them out and trying to understand how to use them.

Bonjour John,

I'm glad you're busy experimenting with the add-ons. I know where to look for help now when I resume myself!

As it stands, I've done no serious work on my current project for over a week now. Apart from analysing quirks and bugs, my main distraction has been tidying up movement effects. I've added quite a lot, both to the built in Movement templates folder and my own User Video Effects > Presets. In fact so much that I've now decided to prune back drastically. For example, I have templates for pans in every four directions, each in 4 different speeds, a huge set of zooms, a raft of stuff for 'panorama' photos, etc, etc. And every one needs a new pair of entries in Translation.ini.

So I'm belatedly coming to the conclusion that it's best to use a simple basic set and just quickly modify them with KFA for individual situations.

This thread might be a good base to post further on Pixelan. I'd be particularly interested to know if/when the bugs I found in my first few minutes of using it get fixed. I never heard any more from the developer/promoter, Michael Freerer.

Hi Terry,

One of the problems is information overload - too much to remember. I try to document some of what I do so that I can find it later, if I even remember that I have it. At least you can see your effects - presets, but remembering what they do is the problem.

I will open another thread about Pixelan in a couple of days. I will also add to the previous thread where you and Carl asked questions. I don't understand what the problem was, or it has been fixed. I noted that there was a problem using the effects in a PIP or video wall. The effect used the full screen even if the image was resized. They found a solution and updated the 3 fade plugins. I am trying them out. They seem to work but all is not obvious. As with masks, the effect depends where the mask is placed.

You mentioned in the other post that you had a problem with stuttering when playing a video and had to reboot. I was having problems with the smoothness (almost no smoothness) of viewing the video effects, so I took measures within MEP as recommended to smooth out playback, and also shut down most background programs except the anti-virus, and changed the Windows screen background to just a simple colour, no more hi-res beautiful mountains. The result seemed to be worse. Yesterday while playing back a couple of short projects, the playback cursor would stick like the needle on a phonograph stuck on a scratch and the sound would stutter/echo/repeat terribly. Stopping playback and restarting playback would do the same but not at the same point.

I put everything back the way I had it before and all works fine today.

I will also add to the previous thread where you and Carl asked questions. I don't understand what the problem was, or it has been fixed.

If you open it to experiment, you can't close the dialog either in the usual Windows way (clicking x) or with the addon's 'Exit without changes'. You have to then remove any changes in MEP manually. Not life threatening, but such a basic flaw in a frequently used feature smacked of poor quality control and lack of attention to detail and my confidence in the program's reliability suffered.

Hi

. . . . So I'm belatedly coming to the conclusion that it's best to use a simple basic set and just quickly modify them with KFA for individual situations. . . . .

I am with you 100% on this - that is why I never bother with a lot of the transitions that are available either with the sotware or available as add-ons.

For me excessive use of transitions takes over from the aim of the movie, in my case I like to create a travelogue or story type video of places I have been to, sporting activities I participate in etc.

When I feel something different is needed then I 'roll my own' as seen in my short Rheinfall video in the Show and Discuss.
