Using 'Last templates'

terrypin wrote on 1/18/2015, 10:21 AM

Q1: I don't see why MEP creates 4 entries in Last templates when I save a project?

High res: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/4019461/MEP-DVD-Menus-LastTemplate-1.jpg

After some editing of the HD Static > General > Default ... 16:9 template, I'd already used Save in last template, (which created the fifth entry from the left) so I didn't even need one extra entry, much less four. But I can understand a single one being generated, for security.

Q2: How long do these entries remain? I should have hundreds by now, not a mere eight!

Q3: I changed the text of a menu's buttons from left align to centre, applied to all, then used Save in last template. But d-clicking that new entry returned the text to left align. Expected behaviour?

Hi Terry,

Check in the folder:

C:\ProgramData\MAGIX\Movie Edit Pro 2014 Plus\DVD\LastLayout

You will have a bunch of subfolders, each with a last layout, including details, tpl file and jpg's, etc.

I have 10 subfolders in MEP2013 and 10 in MEP2014, so I think that 10 is the max.

I don't know how the numbering of the subfolders is arrived at.

I'm just getting everything back in order on my computer after installing an SSD and new internal HD. I restored the system, etc. to the new SSD, but my data (documents, etc.) were moved out of C before backiing up for recovery. I had to uninstall/reinstall many Magic programs, except MEP2015, Samplitude Music Studio 2015, and Audio & Music Lab 2014. These 3 just asked to change the device (computer) and then checked the license and all was fine.

The only problem that I've had is with Xara Designer Pro X10, which refuses to complete the installation. X9 reinstalled with no problem. Strange. I definitely did not want to reinstall Windows 7; too many programs installed. I haven't tried all of the yet, but those that I have tried had no problems....yet. Only Magix programs had problems.

Hi

@John CB

OT however

. . . . Only Magix programs had problems. . . .

Looks like I am not the only one - when I was testing SATA 3 SSD vs SATA 3 HD - I had issues installing MEP on the SSD - in the end I relegated the SSD to the role of third drive for rendering to.

@John EB,

I am presently writing up my trials and tribulations under VPX6 where I left off about Neat Video and your heads up on the software to backup and recover to an SSD. Thanks for that. I was successful except for Xara DPX10. Windows and programs now start up very fast, so I am quite happy with the SSD.

As you'll see, I ended up with a second SSD which I intend to install as an external drive using a SATA to USB connection. Is that how you connected the SSD? Or is it internal? I only have 2 SATA connectors on the motherboard.

Another questiion: You say that you use the drive for rendering. How do you set that up? Do you mean encoding?

Thanks,

John

@Terrry,

Sorry, I don't have answers to all or your questions.

Hi John CB

       I actually meant the destination for the export - is this what you meant by 'encoding'?

Intermediate rendering is done wherever MEP is programmed to do it  - not found that location yet.

@John EB,

Both, exporting and the encoding files destination location.

I'm wondering if there is any real speed increase by exporting to an SSD rather than a normal HD. I suspect that the destination is not the bottleneck.

However, would there be a speed advantage if the source files were read from an SSD? Or is it neutral?

I tried exporting the Neatvideo test file to the SSD and there was no noticeable speed difference; it was still slow.

Still haven't looked at Terry's other menu questions.

Hi

. . . . I suspect that the destination is not the bottleneck . . .

Correct - the bottleneck on a fast machine is the SATA interface / HDD  which on a single hard drive is having to constantly switch from Read to Write during rendering.

As an example when exporting to MOV the data flow is HDD >> MEP >> SDD - as the HDD and SSD are on different SATA buses the data flow is more one way.

Would like to know where MEP is storing the temp file it uses for mp4 and AVCHD - this does not appear to be in the destination folder and I suspect it is somewhere in either the Program Data folder or users AppData folder.

Apologies to Terry for going OT.

Q3 - I get the same behaviour in MEP 2014 and 2015.  This is not what I would expect - a bug?

Hi John,

Thanks for checking. One other possibility is that text is entirely outside the template's influence. I suppose it's reasonable that the content should not be set in stone, but I'd still have expected the formatting to be.

Any comments on Q1 (the one I didn't number except by implication!)?

Hi

Interesting discussions here about the SSD performance in MEP.

In order not to hijack Terry's thread any further I have started a new one here: http://www.magix.info/us/ssds-and-improved-performance-in-mep.forum.1120002.html and am interested in any comments or theories.

No one with any thoughts on my main question please, about why those extra templates are created?

Maybe I'll ask Ralf if it's a bug, or for some other reason that eludes me.

Hi Terry

Apologies for throwing this OT.

AFAICS the behaviour is by design.

The best way I can describe this is that it is a  'history' of the templates used - a bit like having more permanent 'undo' type function with 8 levels (maximum) being saved.
