4k Video File - Audio corrupts after 19min 56seconds, looses all audio

Del escrito el 28.04.PM a las 22:37 horas

So I've been trying to edit this same video about 6 times, and every time I get about half way through, all the audio for the project stops playing, and I am unable to get it back. This is for the entire video, not just the video from ~20mins onwards.

The audio was getting slightly out of sync upto the point where it stopped working. At most the audio was around 5sec delayed from the video.

The video file I am making an edit of is a single .MXF file, about 50mins long, which I am cutting down into a single video edit ~3-4mins long. The file is 22.2GB in size.

I've tried multiple settings in File > Program Settings > Audio > output devices.

I've restarted, updated all drivers, reset VPX to factory settings, and nothing seems to fix this issue.

I have all the correct codecs, as the video plays fine upto around 20mins, and have edited several other videos using the exact same video editing pipeline.

I am editing from a M2SSD, with read/write speeds of over 1500MB/sec.

If you have any fixes or know anything that may help, I'd love to hear.

The video file is from a Sony XDCam, is in 4k, and the video details are below:

I am running Windows 10, details below:

Thankyou for your help.

Hi Del.

Have you run task master to see how much is being loaded into ram? I'm currently doing a 3-minute video in 4K and already MEP and windows between them have used over 9.7gig of ram. IMHO, virtual ram may not cut it.

Other things to check are available hard drive space on both the C:drive and the drive you have your project on.

Somewhere along the line it feels like you are running out of resources. Remember it's non-destructive editing so any of those files in use are being fully loaded ready to be accessed and read.

Ray.

Hello CubeAce,

Thanks for your input. Yeah I checked TaskMan. It didn't look anything out of the ordinary!

I can play the video through using VLC and it has no problems and no delays in the audio, so that is promising, that it's not a corrupt audio file.

Also, if I close and re-load VPX, and an empty project, I can scrub to anywhere in the video file, but I get significant audio delay for any footage ~20mins into the file.

I'll try and reduce the audio buffer. Counter-intuitive, but it may limit it running out of RAM.

Re disk space, I have 16TB of drives on my rig. C has 17GB free, and the editing disks have 54GB and 172GB free respectively.

Re RAM, it seems to top out at 6.4GB of usage, with 1.5GB available.

Kindest Regards,

Del

@Del

Hi Del.

17gig of free hard rive space on the C:drive is probably at least half of what you would need, particularly if you are not running much ram. Add another 20gig of free space to that if you can or there will be no room for the program to move files around on. You will always have headroom on ram as there is always a reserved amount. The program will switch to disk space before that happens.

Try clearing 5 or 10gig of space and see if the program freezes further down the line as an experiment.

Ray.

Can you download and install the free MediaInfo utility, point it at your video file and post the result of the Text view here? (The screenshot of the Properties doesn't show every detail, unfortunately.)

One thing I notice about the audio is that it is 32 bit mono. Mono is no problem, but 32 bit might well be! I suspect that that might be causing the loss of sync; VPX is having to process twice as many bits per sample as it would normally expect.

I would also fully echo what @CubeAce (Ray) has written, especially about the amount of RAM you have installed. For 4k I think 8GB is really too little.

MediaInfo details below:

This is the original video file:

This is the video file copied into the project folder:

I've also found the VPX log file and nothing untoward appears there either as far as I can see...
This is a snippet from the log. During this time the audio worked for a short while, then stopped. This occurred multiple times, hence the program restarts.

I also, tried exporting the video file to see if the audio would be present there, but it was silent for the whole video.

Thanks again,

Additionally, once a project corrupts (I'm guessing its a Magix corruption) if the project saves, after the audio disappears, then even if you close and restart the program, there will be no audio.

If however, you go back to a saved version from before the audio disappears, then the audio is present.
So it appears that something happens to the video/audio linkage, and once that is broken, it is gone forever.

I also tried creating frametable, as was mentioned in another post, and that can sometimes bring back audio, however, it does not seem linked to the video clips, and the audio can be from a completely different segment of video.

I hope that helps somewhat.

Regards,

Del

Hi

Use MediaInfo to analyse the video clip and post the analysis from the Text view the image you have posted only tells us partial information about the MXF file.

What is the version number of VPX are you using?.

Hi Jeff.

I think you can rule out 32-bit audio files as being a problem. I exported a 32-bit, floating-point wav file from an audio project I've been using within MEP and replaced the 24 bit version I would normally use.

There were no problems with audio sync, playback or exporting with it.

Sorry, that didn't come out very large.

Ray.

Hi Ray.

Thanks for this. 32 bit being the problem was a suspicion; clearly wrong!

I wonder how much of @Del's problem is that the file has, apparently, 3 channels of mono audio?

Hi Jeff.

I don't know if it's that or the file size being over 21gig in size. My files get broken down into 4gig segments from my cameras. I mean, that has to be loaded as one file right?

Only 8 gig of memory and 17 gig of working C: hard drive space?

I also just noticed the title of this topic.

Is it just a coincidence that is the normal amount of time a 4K video gets to using about 4gig of data?

I wonder if breaking the file down to separate files of just under 4gig would alleviate the problem?

Hi

32GB of ram should be more than sufficient but still please think of making much more space on your C: drive available, as additional ram on its own may not work. I never let a C: drive get more than half full but on larger C: drives I would still aim to keep at least 70GB or more free. Some of my photo editing packages are far worse than MEP seems to be at allocating computer resources.

Not sure whether you can break the files up of not without losing quality.

John EB or CB may be best to answer that one.

Ray.

Unfortunately I only have a relatively small C drive. is there any way to move the working files to my Z M2 drive? It's 2-3x faster.

emmrecs escrito el 29.04.PM a las 18:35 horas

@Del

You can place your video files on any drive you choose! You will simply need to point VPX towards wherever they are when you reopen the project because it will say it can't find the files and ask you to "tell it" where they are!

The speed of your second drive is NOT going to materially affect the problem you are seeing, I think, since I doubt this is a "disc-access" problem. But it is always a very good idea to keep "working files" on a different drive to Windows and Programs.

Because I am "fortunate" enough to have seven physical drives, most of which are partitioned, I keep C just for Windows (and those programs which will NOT install anywhere else), D is dedicated to "Programs", "J" is dedicated to video files and projects, all the others to various types of data and back-ups. They are a mixture of HDDs, SSDs and external USB 2 and USB 3. I am most definitely NOT suggesting that you should aim to emulate anything like my set-up, but merely post it here to show that "working files" can be stored anywhere you choose to put them!

Hey Jeff,

I actually have over 16TB of internal storage, with an additional 12TB of removable storage. My C drive however is only 256GB, so with windows using it whenever it fancies running an updateit can leave me with anything from 20GB to 5TB free.

My video files are all distributed across various drives depending on several factors. When used for editing, they are copied to my M2 drive which is ultra fast.

My comment on VPX was to try and make it use a different drive for optimisation purposes. Are you saying that is not necessary?

Hi

Thanks for the MediInfo analysis that has given me the information I was looking for.

The audio is in 4 separate mono streams, presumably this video has been recorded in surround sound and each stream is one of the microphones ie front left and right and rear left and right.

In VPX, with the full 50 mins MXF file on the timeline:

  1. when video / audio is set to be displayed on separate tracks, are there 4 separate audio tracks?

  2. if one audio track then right click it and select Display channels what do you see?

  3. move to the end of the video clip does the audio end at the same time as the video?

  4. set the audio to display waveform is the waveform ending with the end of the clip?

@emmrecs, @CubeAce

The audio is 24 bit. This should be handled OK in VPX.

Yes, I agree that's what MediaInfo says but did you notice in the Properties screenshot in the opening post that it is stated to be 32 bit? I guess the answer is it must actually be 32 bit Floating Point? Does that make any difference, I wonder?

While having projects run on a fast drive like an M.2 drive is good it doesn't appear to be that necessary unless you get into laying down a crazy amount of tracks that have to run in parallel. A fast SATA drive or even external USB3 drive will cope. My operating system and program hard drive is a slowish (and cheap) 250GB SSD and my project drive I use before archiving is an older M.2 drive. But projects will run from my external USB3 drives and my internal WD Black drives.

I just tried running two different 32 bit floating-point stereo wav files at once in MEP. Still no problems.

Hello again gents,

So my RAM arrived today. 32GB.

I re-ran some analytics and it turned out that my machine had been running pretty low on resources previously. With the new RAM I have over 23GB of unallocated/unused ram. Before, it was maxed out when taking into account the cached files in ram.

However, I am still having the same issues as before. All the audio is dropping off when I start editing the video. And if I scrub/drag the video in the preview window to >20mins, the audio is very out of sync. Multiple seconds, with the video infront of the audio.

Do you have any more suggestions or ideas on how I can fix this problem, as it is really preventing me from getting out my next couple of videos.

Kindest Regards,

Del

I've been doing some more research, and VPX seems to have audio issues with all my video files, in that the audio goes out of sync on them all.

In VPX, the video when I click properties, the video is stated as 30FPS, with 2 audio tracks. This is incorrect. The video is infact 29.97FPS.

When I separate out the audio into its own track, it does last the same duration as the video.

I did some calculations, and if the video is 29.97fps, but VPX thinks i is 30fps, that makes 0.03fps error. Over a 25 min video, that equates to 25*0.03*60 = 45 frames = 1.5sec at 30fps.

I did some tests with my other cameras (GoPros) and the video when imported into VPX correctly states it as 59.97 or 29.97 FPS, which is correct for those files. So it appears that when VPX imports video from the Sony XDCam, in UHD/4K, the video is incorrectly processed using 30FPS, not 29.97FPS.

Windows file properties, VLC, and the MediaInfo app you asked me to use both correctly state the video as 29.97FPS.

So then, how do I force VPX to treat the video as 29.97 FPS when importing it into the project? I think this should solve the audio sync issues??

I still have no idea why the audio drops out completely though, when I am editing a video. Or why I cannot seem to get it back when it does disappear.

Lastly, what does the function "Create (new) frametable" do?

Thanks,

Del

Hi Del.

What audio driver are you using? How are your buffers set with amount of buffers and sample size?

This is what I'm using but your needs may differ. I doubt any of the figures will be lower, but may need to be higher.

Try to keep the buffer number low as possible but avoid using just 1 buffer. The higher the amount of buffers you use, the more MEP starts lag to commands in playback.

IMHO, Try to avoid using Direct Sound. Use the Wave Driver if at all possible.

See if that helps. I know this is supposed to be the playback section but it may have some bearing on exporting as well.

You can only try.
