"Cannot open waveform device for playback" error message

k9vet escrito el 27.08.AM a las 04:19 horas

When I open my project for editing, I get the above message and it says "not enough memory, etc." My C drive shows 21 Gb free, so what is the problem?? Then the playback triangle button doesnt show and I cant play the movie for editing! How can I quit anything to get more memory? This is an intermittent problem that I dont know how to fix. Please help! MEP Pro 17.0.3.184 Windows 7 machine

@k9vet

The two error messages each suggest different problems, I fear. The one about the "waveform device" is most commonly seen when your soundcard/audio interface is set to a different sample frequency to the one which your MEP project expects; OR that said soundcard/audio interface is already being used by another app. To help diagnose this it would be very useful if you could post the full spec of your computer (see this post) and especially the type of soundcard/audio interface you are using and the type of driver, MME, WASAPI, ASIO etc..

The message about "not enough memory" has nothing to do with the free space on your drive C:\! Rather, it is suggesting that, whatever you are wanting to do, requires more RAM than your computer has or is prepared to release to MEP. Again, that detailed computer spec will help us.

I appreciate your answer. Here is more info about some of my issues with MEP Pro lately.

The sound problem I described was solved when I loaded my movie by clicking on the MVP file icon first, which then starts MEP Pro running and the movie loads OK. But if I first start MEP Pro and then select the movie to load, it doesn't work right. Strange.

Also, lately when I try to drag and drop scenes and move them around in my movie, the changes I make don't "stick". The scene doesn't stay where I put it but stays where it was before! I have to drag and drop the scenes into the timeline by making a space and then drag and drop it in directly from the import list. I think the Magix authors should know about this new problem so it can be fixed. What do you think??

I think the Magix authors should know about this new problem so it can be fixed. What do you think??

Possibly so, but version 17, which your earlier post shows you have, is now 2 versions old; the current latest is 19.0.1.18 so I doubt that any potential problem with that version will now be "fixed", sorry.

BTW, which variant of MEP do you have? You write about "MEP Pro" but MEP stands for Movie Edit Pro, the variants are Basic, Plus and Premium.

I'm not sure what to suggest about the fact that opening MEP and then the project file causes the audio device error, whereas opening directly from the project file does not. I wonder whether something in the start-up configuration of MEP has become slightly corrupted? As for the problem of inserting clips to a place within an existing movie: do a search in the help files for "ripple", both "single track" and "mulititrack"; I think that may solve your problem.

I use MEP Pro Premium. I have been using Magix software from MEP 14 on, so I am quite loyal to Magix. I am glad that people like you are there to help with questions because I am not pleased to have to PAY $$ for help or updates!

I've search the forum for a solution to the following MEP (Premium 2021) using Windows10 on a Microsoft SurfaceBook laptop:

Cannot open waveform device 'Speakers (Realtek High Definiti' for playback!

Reason: Undefined external error.

I have read about the audio sample rate may need changing, but when I view the MEP settings, 4800 is set as the sample rate and can not be changed (the selections are grayed). My MEP had been working successfully up until yesterday. I did notice that a recent Windows update (Quality Updates(17) 2021-06: KB5003637) had been installed on 6/16/2021. I unistalled MEP and re-installed the software, to no avail. I purchased the MEP Premium 2021 in April 2021. The software had been working successfully until this week.

Please assist in providing a prompt solution because I have several video editing projects on hold...

Hi

. . . . I have read about the audio sample rate may need changing, but when I view the MEP settings, 4800 is set as the sample rate and can not be changed  . . . .

The setting you change is the audio chipset sample rate not the program. The settings are found in Windows settings, System, Sound, Sound Control Panel.

Playbsck tab - Speakers, Properties, Advanced tab

Recording tab - Stereo mixer, Properties, Advanced tab - the Stereo mixer may require enabling.

Note the Surfacebook may have a different name for the playback device

Thanx for your prompt reply, John. But my Windows system settings does not have a "Playback tab" or a "Recording tab". I have previously looked into my Windows settings hoping to find a way to modify the audio sample rate, to no avail...

UPDATE: I went back to Windows settings and realized that the Sound Control Panel was listed on the right side of the display (under the heading "Related Settings"). I'm currently attempting to explore this new information and will provide feedback...

daccs escrito el 18.06.PM a las 23:40 horas

John, I was able to change the sample rate to 44.1 from 48 and NOW MEP works!

Thanx so much...
