Compatibility Problem or something else?

CubeAce escrito el 22.10.AM a las 00:25 horas

First. The project is working but puzzled as to why it's working.

Explanation.

I'm trying out files from a new camera that officially came out today. There have been files made available for people to try out that I have used to see if they presented any problems to MEP2021.

The camera has 4 built in mics that can be used in various configurations but I can't find out what the configuration was when the files were created. They all show roughly the same MediaInfo data though.

So the problem that isn't a problem is odd.

I set the project to the files corresponding frame rate, frame size and audio sampling rate.

I was expecting to see two sets of stereo audio files but didn't. Just the one set. Plays OK. Sounds fine, but.

A: The media Info only shows one stereo sound stream at a 48kHz sampling rate which is what I set the project to. As I said it plays OK exports OK but in the Movie Settings the settings have changed to a different audio sampling rate.

So my questions are.

If the camera has and can record four sound channels why are four channels not showing?

(I know the sound on the camera is configurable and have no idea of the settings used but hope there may be a clue in the data.) All files show the same settings.

Why has the sampling rate changed but the project is playing OK and sounds fine.

Here is (I hope) the relevant data.

If anyone has a clue I'd like some suggestions as I may want to buy this camera at a later date.

Ray.

Hi Ray

Hmmm - the DJI Pocket 2 no less 😂 - from the specs and 'promo' blurb

48 kHz, AAC, Four microphones on the handle provide surround-sound audio.

From the MediaInfo analysis it looks like the video has been recorded stereo only.

If it was Surround Sound then the data should look something like this, this is from my Sony video camera

Channel(s)                               : 6 channels
Channel layout                           : L R C LFE Ls Rs

However as it is in AAC format a quick check with MEP or VPX would be to select the audio, right click and select Extract audio channels.

If it is Surround sound then the audio tracks will look like this after extracting

Hi John.

Thanks for that. There is no such selection available with a right click so I guess that answers that one.

It's possible the files were set to a stereo recording but it's the 44kHz blanked out section within MEP movie settings that has me puzzled when the project was set up to be 48kHz. Also that it's playing back just fine. Actually I have five files all recorded with the same settings as far as I can make out.

They have left a lot out of the specs of the Pocket 2 (They have dropped the word Osmo on the newer releases)

It's become very versatile for what it is, hence my interest and happier with carting much lighter equipment around for outings. Connected to my phone to get a larger screen and it really is a nice little combo. Now that it also has headphone monitoring and external microphone capabilities both either wired or Bluetooth or Wi-Fi along with live streaming, it's a one stop shop for me.

If anyone is interested in the files I found to test, they can be found here

Hi Ray

I have checked the sample videos, they are all Stereo 2 channel so the Extract channels option will not be available.

The camera looks impressive, the only down side for me is it is not waterproof - no good for snorkelling.

Hi John.

They do waterproof cases for them 😃. I don't think there is one yet for the 2 but there will be. There is one for the Osmo Pocket 1. Dimensions have changed a bit though as has the fov.

What did you think of the image quality for such a small sensor?

Any ideas why my project changed and locked into 44kHz?

Hi Ray

Thanks for the link, will have a look. Interesting to note that users are still saying you need a red filter on for underwater use - I do not have to do this with my Sony.

Image quality is very good, sensor size is quite large at ~ 7.53 x 5.64 mm, when you compare to mobile phone sensors of a similar resolution.

. . . . Any ideas why my project changed and locked into 44kHz . . . .

Did you not do some tests for another audio issue with the 44.1kHz setting, and is now the setting to use in new projects or can you not change the setting in the Project settings?

Hi John.

I think they are using Sony sensor for the new Pocket possibly of their own design similar to how Sony produce chips for Nikon cameras. With a little delving it could be the Sony IMX686 sensor or similar I could be wrong about that though. The need for a filter could be down to the casing window not being really high quality. For an underwater housing it's quite cheap and basic. People have taken it down to 50 meters though. ( I don't think it's rated for that).

No. As I said I had the project set for the file specs. It was after importing the clips from within MEP I found that setting had changed and greyed itself out. That's what made me query the audio data.

Hi Ray

. . . . I think they are using Sony sensor for the new Pocket . . . .

That is quite possible as I noticed the colour balance is very close to my Sony cameras which is a plus for me.

This is one of the reasons I do not like GoPro's the colour balance is way off when compared alongside my Sony's.

. . . .People have taken it down to 50 meters though. ( I don't think it's rated for that) . . .

It is rated to 60m - at that depth the pressure is about 85psi on the window or around 200 - 250 pounds over its entire area

. . . . It was after importing the clips from within MEP I found that setting had changed

That is why I asked if your previous projects were for the audio issue with sample rate set at 44.1kHz. Using the adjust project will only change the resolution and frame rate in the project settings - it will not touch the audio sample rate.

. . . . and greyed itself out. . . . .

Once you add any object to the timeline the audio settings are greyed out in the project settings.

Hi John.

Al my projects have always used 48kHz.All my video sources are 48Khz but some of my audio only files are 96kHz.

I had never noticed the greying out of the sample rate before. I checked and you are correct. All my previous projects I checked are set to 48kHz. I'll try recreating the project.

I agree, Go-Pro colour has never been good IMHO. Terrible at skin tones and on auto the ISO values constantly change to such a degree you can see the picture noise change as the video plays. On top of that the newest one now does variable frame rates. Hi ISO use is really noisy, I would rather use my phone. DJI do have waterproof gimballed drones so maybe in the future but I don't think so as they have the DJI Action.
