MEP 2015 Denoiser - Has anyone used it sucessfully ?

bojac escrito el 06.07.PM a las 22:55 horas

I'm trying to use the Denoiser in MEP to cleanup video clips with retively week background noises (hissing) but I can't really get it to work proberly.

I have set the playback position at a point in the video with only the background hissing and have created a sample. But when running the clip with the Denoiser enabled it only has effect when I crank the level up to position 40 (max). At 40 the background noise i gone but a lot of digitil noise is introduced. Alt levet 39 the denoiser has no effect at all. Changing the levels "Noise level" and / or "Reduce noise"  has no effect (besides "Reduce noise" at setting 40).

When I play the recorded noise sample it sounds as it should, as does the buildt in noise sambles.

I installed Audacity and tried the same function. Here it worked perfectly, but I need it to work in MEP as moving back and forth between the two it not really an option. There is just to many seperate video clips to clean up.

Has anyone any suggestions to why it's not working

Hi

The Denoiser does work correctly, however its effectiveness depends on the relative differences in the sound levels between the noise you want to remove and what you want to keep.

. . . . I crank the level up to position 40 (max). At 40 the background noise i gone but a lot of digitil noise is introduced. Alt levet 39 the denoiser has no effect at all.  . . . .

This would suggest the noise level is too high for the Denoiser - AFAICS the Denoiser is for removing tape noise, which is at a very low level,  from video recorded on analogue tape or mini DV tapes.

I use a seperate audio editor to reduce background noise and wind noise when required, the Audio cleaning in MEP does not have a Noise gate and some other functions which are very useful.

The noise level is actually pretty low.

Hi Bo,

Further to what John EB said, I have been successful occasionally, but I too use other tools.

I did some testing yesterday recording my voice with a fan on close by to see how much I could reduce the fan noise. I took various noise samples and played with the settings and was able to reduce the noise somewhat. In the advance settigs screen, leave the Noise level at 40, but reduce the Reduce Noise slider to about 6. You should not exceed 12 or distortion starts. Make sure that you uncheck "Remove camera noise only." Check or uncheck "Optimize for voice" as appropriate. Check "Listen to removed noise only." This is where you can play with the sliders to try to get the best match. You want to hear the noise but very little of the "good" audio.

Next, you should play with the Equalizer. You may be able to further reduce the noise by finding the right frequency range and reducing it and boostting others slightly.

I use Melda Productions MDynamicEQ which shows a frequency curve. I can use this to find the main offending frequencies and reduce them and narrow the Q or width. Great tool.

In MEP Plus/Premium, there is also the possibility to edit externally in Music Editor 3, which comes with MEP. This requires mixing down first. I have had mixed success with its tools, but there are more parameters to play with and fine-tune.

I also use Magix Audio & Music Lab 2014 Premium which has excellent tools to remove background noise, including a Noise gate as John EB mentioned. In any event, it is extremely difficult to separate good noise from background noise and completely (or almost) remove the latter.

If you make available a short audio clip containing background noise and good audio clip, we can take a stab at it using MEP. Use Dropbox or something like that for file sharing.

I found the problem - A huge embarrassing oversigt on my part. As soon as I saw the reply from browj2 I knew what my problem was. I ran the Denoiser again, deselected the "Remove camera noise only" and the problem (of course) went away - face palm.

> browj2: Next, you should play with the Equalizer. You may be able to further reduce..
As it has only 10 bands, its not really possible to use it without the sound suffering.

Don't you find using external tools very time consuming. I typically have a lot of seperate video clips with varying sound tracks and having to switch back and forth constantly - going from one clip to the next - would just be to time consuming.

Thanks for the replies.

Hi Bo,

Glad you sorted it out. Yes, the EQ tool is limited. Try the presets and adjust from there. It depends on the nature of the audio.

I usually only export in two cases:

  1. When I need to clean an object that is quite problematic, and
  2. Only at the end if I want to do a better job of cleaning up the entire audio or most of it. If I have pre-recorded audio, then I mute that before exporting. Most of my audio is with the video from one camera only, so usually I don't have to edit the clips separately.

There are 2 ways to export the file:

  1. Select a range or the entire files and do a File, Export, as WMV
  2. Mix down the audio (Compile audio - Shift+D). This will create a wav file on a separate track and in an external folder and will delete the audio clips that are not muted, so be careful with this. You can always get the sound back (undo) or restore sound on each clip. Undo is the best. Note where.the audio file was created and its name when you do compile audio. Then take that file and import it into the external audio editor. Once done, export and import into MEP and replace the file that was created, or insert on a new track and mute the original.

Also, and as I mentioned, the MDynamicEQ works in MEP and really helps take care of many problems and enhancements. Thus I am not often exporting the audio clips. You can download a trial of this EQ and try it out. John Baker and I bought when it was on sale, and Melda has regular sales of their products.

The other tools that I would like to have in MEP are Magix eFX VocalStrip, then eFX Gate and eFX DeEsser. VocalStrip combines a highpass filter, gate, deEsser, compression and tone in one tool and is used mainly for mastering the final product. Gate and deEsser are used more in mixing or on audio objects. I have these in AML and some in Music Maker, but Magix does not make them available to MEP, even though I have them elsewhere. Too bad. You may be able to try them out as they are probably installed as demos.

Hi

As John CB says I also bought the Melda MDynamicEQ plugin, however I have not used it for noise reduction, but for its better compression / equalisation functions which do a great job without 'muddying' the audio, bass still has punch and trebles are clearer then the MEP compressor.

I will now have to experiment with it for noise reduction - thanks for suggesting it John CB.

@John EB,

One thing that gave me a hint was the presets for the equalizer in Audio Cleaning of MEP. There is one for Decreased noise, another for Emphasize speech. Then I watched the Analyzer curve and sonogram in MDynamicEQ to see what was happening in a section where there was just background noise. I picked areas that I looked problematic and I reduced those frequencies a bit. It helped.

Here is a screen shot of just removing a very slight background buzz on a clip recorded with my mic and no or little background noise (maybe a hum from external hard disks).

I didn't add in deEssing.

Here is another with the fan on in the background. This was more challenging. You can see the sound (sonogram) in the area with just the fan background. There was also a higher frequency sound that I had to hunt for.

Some adjusting was needed to avoid affecting my voice. I got the fan noise down to a much lower level.

Still, more testing with different background noises is required, along with noting the results. I'll have to start keeping a log and do some more reading up on this.

@Bo, this should give you an idea as to some of the help that you can get by seeing the frequency curve and sonogram.
