You only need to hover the mouse cursor over the side bar indicated, the mouse scroll wheel will then have focus on the up/down slider, this also works for the horizontal slider at the bottom of the timeline and the zoom + and - , and other buttons associated with these sliders - - you will see them highlight.

You will also find that the scroll wheel can be used on many other controls, eg in the Mixer, however you do have to single click the control(s) to set to set focus on it/them, it also gives finer adjustment than just dragging the controls.

My side bars are illuminated/highlighted all the time, hence I've always held down the left mouse button. I didn't realise I could just place the mouse there.

Or, hold down the Alt key and scroll up and down with the scroll wheel.

Ctrl+scroll wheel zooms in and out on the timeline.

Thank you SO much you guys - very much appreciated. I kinda knew about the sidebars.... the question was....(I think the answer is 'NO').... can you 'make' the middle mouse button scroll up and down (as opposed to the default: side to side), WITHOUT going to the sidebars, holding down the alt key or anything? So, in other words, change the default of the middle mouse button.

To be honest I use two monitors for editing. I can use one monitor just for the timeline view if needed so can easily show 16 tracks at once. I've more or less had to ever since using a music DAW. Screen real estate with any editing program is more convenient. Although I don't use keyboard shortcuts as much as others here do, keyboard shortcuts have an advantage in use and knowing just the few that you really need for your own personal workflow helps a lot.

Just like to thank you guys again - really. You are all amazing genltmen.

I do a LOT (as in sometimes 8 to 10 hours a day) in my music studio and on Magix. For music I have four monitors going and for Magix three.... Anything I can do to save wrist, finger movements is essential. I am very aware of the 'Alt' + scroll and it does indeed achieve the goal. Also, putting the mouse over the sidebars. The thing is that is still another wrist+finger movement. My original question was; "Is it possible to have to scroll wheel on the mouse move the timeline program up and down instead of left and right.... the scroll wheel. The scroll wheel only - not move the mouse over here or there and press ALT, or hover over sidebar.... the actual scroll wheel itself. I know it can be done because there is a line in the program that tells the wheel to move the timeline left t right. All my other software move things up and down with the scroll wheel.

But I sincerely thank you guys SO MUCH - really.

If you are using three screens for MEP do you have one monitor turned 90 degrees to fit more tracks into the monitors Viewscreen?

Sometimes..... and sometimes - in line of sight - for clips becomes more important. But even though I can extend the the timeline workspace, and I totally understand what you are saying, it sure would make life a lot easier if I could just 'flick' the scroll on the mouse to view up and down and not side to side. Or use the 'ALT' key - more finger/wrist movements. I'm currently working on a movie.

I do understand what you are saying. Especially when the timeline scrolls automatically anyway and there is also a fast forward / backward control on the preview monitor.

Perhaps ask John EB to add it to the feature request list.

I have never understood why scrolling goes horizontal rather than vertical. I still accidentally try it now and again.

I work in a U shaped desk with my mouse at elbow sit down height to reduce strain and to reduce hand/arm movement. I do not have to look up or down at my monitors either. I also have two keyboards. One raised in front of my main monitor and one next to the mouse.

Even then though I find it beneficial to get up and have a walk around or make a cup of tea every few hours. Get away from the workspace. If only for the benefit of my eyesight and wrist.

What you are looking for in changing the mouse wheel scroll function is not controlled by the program.

Windows mouse drivers control the mouse functions so if your mouse has additional buttons and/or is programmable you may be able to change the the way the Scroll wheel works, however this may affect all programs if the mouse driver cannot detect which program is in use.

An alternative would be to use a something like a multimedia controller, eg a Contour Shuttle, which is fully programmable, can detect the program in use, and enables program specific presets for the controls to be created. However this would mean you have to work 2 handed as a Shuttle does not have the basic mouse movement capability - just takes a little getting used to.

Not sure you are completely correct there John.

The mouse behaviour in my other programs that have multiple tracks I could scroll with do indeed scroll up and down in the tracks section rather than side to side as their default behaviour. Pressing down the mouse wheel allows me both up and down movement as well as sideways movement as it effectively 'grabs' the contents within the inspection window.

I have the latest version of the Microsoft Intellimouse and drivers but it doesn't seem to have the same flexibility it had in Win 7 to change various parts of the mouse behaviour as the drivers are no longer supported in Win 10.

Oh dear!

I played around with my ShuttlePro V2 ( @Roger-Hall - this would be appropriate for you), reprogrammed the outer jog wheel to be Alt+mouse wheel up and things went wonky. I also played around with holding down the mouse wheel and scrolling and playback started. After the change to the ShuttlePro, or something else, my mouse wheel now scrolls up and down in the Project Window. The commands for the ShuttlePro no longer work properly - something is seriously wrong. Have to reboot.

I'll try the inner wheel next time, but I think that there must be a way.

How the program interprets the commands (action) sent from Windows is dependant on the program. AFAIK there are not many programs which allow redefining of the mouse actions, keyboard shortcuts yes.

To change the commands (actions) for the mouse, has to be done in the mouse drivers if it is programmable ie exhibit the same capabilities for changing the action as for example a Shuttle.

No, only the first one. There were strange things happening, even with the keyboard, so I don't know what was going on. Everything went back to normal after rebooting. The mouse wheel scrolls horizontally as it should. Whew!

I'll try the ShuttlePro again a bit later.

Maybe I'm misinterpreting your first statement of.

By which I took to mean that MEP was not in control of that movement but was solely down to the mouse driver command instead of 'Because MEP has mapped it that way it can't be changed within the program unlike keyboard commands'.

I went through the Shortcuts list in VPX and there is no access to the two scrolling commands - Mouse wheel Upwards/Downwards and Alt+Upwards/Downwards. If Magix gave us access to these, we could change them, I presume.

I would imagine it should be possible as a 'switchable ' option.

It has always seemed a bit odd to me that there are three ways to scroll left to right only using the mouse but not up and down. Then again I don't often have more tracks running than I can see in the timeline on one monitor and a lot does depend on individual workflow patterns.
