Remind me again about using the MS HEVC encoder

pmikep escrito el 02.03.AM a las 10:28 horas

As I just posted, I finally installed MEP 2020 Pro. It updated to 19.0.2.58.

I'm in experimenting phase and tried encoding to HEVC for fun.

IIRC, Ray said that he uses the free MS HEVC codec for this.

I had downloaded the MS HEVC codec, and it shows up in my Win10 App list when I'm in Admin account.

I presume that it's available to my User account too.

But when I clicked on the HEVC encode, I got the pop up telling me that I had to pay to activate the Magix one.

Is there a trick to this? Do I need to point Magix to the MS codec?

I remember from the old days that there was a way to select encoders on the Import/Export tab. (Default vs. Main Concept.) But I don't see any way to select the MS HEVC, let alone any encoder.

Started with MEP 11, then 17, then MX, then MEP 2013, 2015, then 2016. Changed to the fast competitor after that, which worked fine with my non-Intel hardware. Then bought a used Dell with an Intel GPU, just to play with MEP again. Installed MEP 2020 Plus in March 2020, even tho I don't like losing patches if I have to reinstall after a year.

Testing on a Dell Vostro, <s>i3-8100</s> updated to i5-9400 w/ UHD 630, 16 GB 2400 DDR4 (CL15), Win10 Home, heavily NTLite'd. Now with GTX-1650 Super OC'd. Added a WD Blue M.2 for OS (PCIe 3), Apps, Temps and Video-In. 2 Monitors. A WD Blue SSD for outputs. (SATA III.)

It was true at the time I tried to use the codec from Microsoft but since one of the last updates I too have had to revert to using the Magix HEVC codec that I had paid for in the past. What I had to do was get in touch with Magix to get a new activation code to work with my new build PC.

Thanks. Interestingly, the MS HEVC codec won't work (as in photos) when I'm in my User account. But it works (for photos) from my Admin account.

That's probably because when I install Windows, I pull the plug on the Ethernet so that Windows only installs "Local" accounts. So although I was able to download the free MS HEVC codec from the store while in my Admin account, apparently it's not approved for my User account.

Doesn't matter since MEP didn't recognize it when I ran MEP from Admin.

Hi

. . . . I pull the plug on the Ethernet so that Windows only installs "Local" accounts. . . . .

Unfortunately it does not work like that.

Windows always installs 2 Administrator accounts - on first install you should be asked for a username - this will be the first Administrator account, albeit with some restrictions.

The second account you do not normally see, however it has a higher level of access and is the one used when you elect a program to be Run as administrator.

Thanks. It turns out that I read about that "secret" account when I was trying to find why HEVC only worked in Admin.

But I meant "local" in the sense that I do not have a Microsoft account (in the cloud) associated with any of my accounts here.

And so my theory is that Win10 won't let me use HEVC in my User account because I did not download it from the Store in that account.

(Nor can I. MS wants a user name and password to download HEVC from their Store when I am in User account. But when I'm in Admin, I can install HEVC from the Store without a user name and password.)

Hi @pmikep

I do not think this is possible. The MS codec will allow you to play HEVC in a Windows Player but you need the paid Magix codec to allow MEP to encode HEVC.

That's what I thought originally too. And I think that makes the most sense, since it's advertised as a decoder.

The only reason why I thought it was an encoder too was because Ray had said that he had used it to encode into HEVC with a Magix product.
