DVD burning problems again MEP 16

nick_vid Posté à 09/05/2017 20:03

Thought I would start another topic as the error code is slightly different to the topic I bumped up earlier. Basically Im having problems burning my finished project onto a DVD. It renders fine, but fails on burning. I did have the same issue when I first got the program but seem to remember changing some settings and using Sony discs and that cured the problem. Its never completely cured it as Ive had a few fail from time to time, but seemed to just be a case of restarting the PC and burning again (not re-rendering) and worked ok. Then some would render and burn straight away so it was abit of a random error.

But recently its got to the stage where its 90% of the time failing. Changed the writer drive for a brand new one and did a test piece but its still the same. On both budget discs and Sony discs. They are - discs but the drive recognises them as + discs. Could that be the issue? If so, how do I change it? The PC works fine, no crashing issues when editing or rendering, just burning issues. This is the long error code.

Hi,

Have you tried to burn a disc image from this project? (The option is Image Recorder on the burn screen, if you're not sure where to select this option.)

Personally, I always produce DVDs using this option, and then use a 3rd party burning app (in my case either Ashampoo Burning Studio 18 or ImgBurn) to then actually burn the disc. The reason for this methodology is partly to remove any chance of the Magix burn routines failing at the burn stage, and also partly because I like to permanently keep the resulting single .iso file, rather than a folder of separate files, vobs, ifos, bup etc.

One thing I notice about your error report is the mention of the Split Point. This is needed by projects which exceed the standard single-layer DVD capacity of about 4.7GB. So how long (playing time) is your project?

Thanks for the reply, where is the image record option? When I have the dvd menu page up and click 'burn' the options I get are DVD, Blu-Ray or AVCHD. Cant see image record anywhere unless Im looking in the wrong place.

The project is the best part of 2 hours long, Ive had no problems making long DVDs in the past, I make sure bit-rate matches the length of the project.

Its generally been pretty reliable up until recently, not sure if Ive changed a setting by mistake or anything. I do have the program installed on my laptop for basic edit jobs and Ive compared the encode settings to that and they are the same. That renders and burns using the same discs fine. But its abit slower than my main PC so only use the laptop for basic edits.

Hi,

See the attached image. The highlighted box has a dropdown which shows your DVD burner and "Image recorder.

Hi

. . . . VideoMode: PAL   Temp Dir: F:\render\ . . . I do have the program installed on my laptop . . . .That renders and burns using the same discs fine. . . .

That would suggest the issue could be with the F: drive - the error log would indicate where the failure is however the error log you posted is missing that data - the section you have posted shows no error nor burning complete - please repost the log extract including the error messages.

What is the F: drive - internal hard drive or SSD drive or an external USB hard drive?

Found the image record setting and it worked fine, Im now checking the test disc all the way through but that seems to work. In the test case the F drive is actually an external USB3 drive, but it does the same from the internal HDD in the PC. I wondered if it was the drive, which is why I used the external one as a test. I'll do another test on the internal drive tomorrow and see what the full error message comes up with

Thanks.

Hi again,

Just returning for a second to the part of the error log you posted, I'm still concerned about the mention of a Split Point because the log shows that MEP was going to split your file a very short way from the end, i.e. it was going to burn that very short final section to the second layer. I assume you were using a standard (single-layer) disc?

So, now you have your image file, can you right click on the file in Explorer, choose Properties and then tell us what the final file size is? Although the .iso format is, technically, "zipped", in practice the size of the file is equal to the size of the "finished article". In other words there is no actual "zipping" (= size reduction) going on.

Hi Jeff

. . . a Split Point because the log shows that MEP was going to split your file a very short way from the end . . .

The split point is always recorded as above in the log, the value shown above is the default for DVD , if a DL disc was in the drive the line would show the actual total disk size.

Slightly OT - here is an odd one to watch out for in the log file

Splitpunkt 4271833088 auf Disk mit Größe 2039775232

The disc was a DL mini DVD (8cm) disk - never understood why the split point was not at about 1 GB.

Done some more tests and still cant get it to burn to a disc. Not even the 'image record' way this time. Ive changed the render folder to the C drive thinking it might be an issue with the HDD I keep the render files in but its still the same. Here is the latest error log. Could do with getting this sorted asap now really as Im starting to get a back log of editing work all channelling through my laptop at the moment!

Hi Nick,

1. Did you try recording an ISO (rather than a folder of DVD files) as Jeff suggested?

2. Have you tried burning with another tool? I used ImgBurn for a decade or so because of problems I had with MEP's burner. (On this new PC, using MEP 2016 Premium or MEP 'Premium', I am successfully using MEP's own burner at present.)

3. Probably irrelevant but I note that your log line 4 reports dll version 6.0.10.20 whereas mine is 6.0.10.28

Hi again,

Sorry this seems to be so much of a pain!

I am no expert but having looked at your posted log file I see three things that are "different" to what I would expect:

  1. I see that DiscAtOnce is off. Since you are burning and finalising a disc (IOW you are not able/intending to add any further files to it) I would expect this option to be On.
  2. I notice the log says you are using DVD+R discs. For standard, single-layer discs I always use DVD-R. Have you tried using different type and format of disc?
  3. I notice the key error message is write error occurred on disc !!!  To me, this suggests a fault with the actual disc, perhaps it was not completely blank, or had a surface error or similar.

Having just re-read through your latest post I noticed this statement: Not even the 'image record' way this time. Ive changed the render folder to the C drive
This confuses me! In a previous post you said you were able to create an Image file. Is it that Image file you are now attempting to burn to disc? I ask because, with an image file, there is no additional "rendering to the C drive" to be done; the image (with an .iso extension) is actually just a zipped file containing all the files and folders ready to be burned to disc. As I wrote before, once I have created the Image file I use an external app, (Ashampoo Burning Studio in my case), selecting the option "Disk Image>Burn Image"; no additional rendering takes place.

So, can you clarify exactly the process you are using once you have finished your MEP Project and are preparing to export and burn it to disc?

Hi

Thanks for the complete log.

In suspect the issue is caused by the discs not being able to be written at 16x speed.

The disc manufacturer ID CMC MAG. AM3 is a disc manufactured by CMC Magnetics that is used by many manufacturers eg HP, Sony, Verbatim TDK and others.

There have been many discussions on other forums in the past about the variability of quality of these discs.

I would suggest you try some 8x speed discs or, as I do, write to DVD-RW first for testing then if the disc is OK and no further editing is required copy the DVD-RW to DVD-R.

This saves money and you do not have to find a use for the coasters.

Thanks for the replies, basically I edit what I need to in the timeline (usually around the 1 hour 45 / 2 hour mark) then switch to the DVD menu page and design the menu using a purpose made template that Ive used for a while with no issues. Then open the click to actually make the DVD. The image folder is usually on the same HDD at the raw footage but changed it to the C drive as a test, and my C drive is also a solid state drive. I change the bit rate to suit the video length and all the other settings seem to match my laptop. It the renders the footage ok but seems to fail when burning to a DVD. It also failed when I did my last blu-ray but I havent tried since. I did manage to get the bluray to burn but only by clicking hardware acceleration on. For DVDs, it doesnt make a difference.

I do have some other DVD discs on order but Ive used them in the last month or so and they have only just started having issues. I also tried a few sony ones I have and its still the same with them. Ive tried changing the burn speed, but that makes no difference. My discs are - writables, and MEP on my laptop recognises them as that but for some reason this PC says they are + writables. Is there any way to change it?

How do you change 'disc at once' to on? Maybe Ive unclicked something by mistake. It seems to render the image OK, Ive copied the complete folder onto my laptop and used MEP to burn it from that using the same discs and it worked straight away.

Hi,

I don't think I can directly answer your question about why the burn on one machine is failing whereas another machine with the same discs does not fail! (Just a thought: could the writer on the failing machine be "failing"? Have you any means of checking whether the firmware of that drive is fully updated?) Also, the fact that you are using DVD-R discs, but the writer that is "suspect" is reporting them as DVD+R would lead me to question it as "not working properly". I know there is some difference in the way that DVD-R discs are written as compared with DVD+R; since the problem writer is seeing your discs as DVD+R, could that be the reason? It is possible the "DiscAtOnce" setting being wrong is also a symptom of writer failure.

Ive copied the complete folder onto my laptop

As Terry pointed out above, you do not need to do this; as well as creating the Disc Image folder there will be a Disc Image file (named as your project, unless you specify a different name, stored wherever you specify), with the .iso extension. That single file contains everything that the folder contains, so simply moving it to your laptop achieves the same outcome. You would need a program that is able to burn the disc from the Image file; I've already posted the program I use but the free ImgBurn will also do this.

Hi

The error log indicates you are using DVD-R discs - despite +R indicated which is a common error which IIRC is associated with the recorded disc type code not being in the writers firmware, so it is id'd as +R.

. . . . . I did manage to get the bluray to burn but only by clicking hardware acceleration on. For DVDs, it doesnt make a difference. . . . .

Using HWA is not use for the actual burning of the disc so this may be a separate issue for BD where the video is rendered to AVCHD file format using HWA if possible and is set in the programs settings. Note if you have HWA turned in the programs settings and turn on Calculate graphics on the GPU in the burn dialog, this can cause issues.

Check the error log for a BD that did not burn without HWA but did burn with HWA start a new topic if there is an error in the log file and it is not at the burning stage, otherwise also post that log here.

DVD files are mpg file format and do not use HWA.

. . . . My discs are - writables, and MEP on my laptop recognises them as that but for some reason this PC says they are + writables . . .

Do you mean re-writeables - to avoid confusion please use add the disc type as stated on the disc, eg: DVD-R, DVD-R DL, DVD-RW, BD-R, BD-RE etc. The + error may also be the firmware issue as I indicated above.

Have you checked to see if there is a firmware update for the writer in the PC as Jeff has posted?

From your first post:

. . . . Changed the writer drive for a brand new one . . .

Are the error log extracts for the old or new writer? If the log extract is for the old writer, what is the new writers make & model or ID as found in the error log?

Still having this problem, whatever I try it makes no difference. Ive tried updating the new drive firmware but its already up to date. Ive tried 2 new makes of blank disc, neither work. One is called Falcon Media and Ive been using these shiney printable discs since the new year and they previously burned fine. Ive also tried changing the dvd region to UK again on the windows settings for the drive. That made no difference. Ive reverted back to my previous drive (an LG one) and still have the same problems. It edits and renders fine but wont burn to anything. Is there a factory reset for burn settings without needing to completely re-install the whole program? How do I switch 'disc at once' to ON? Ive had a look around but cant find how to do it.

I will render a blu-ray later on the newer drive (ASUS) and see if that works but Im not holding my breath!
