Loss of quality when converting to MPEG 4, MEP Pro Plus 17.

I’ve noticed a decrease in picture quality when converting a mvp movie file, a slideshow with jpg photos, to
MPEG 4.  The photos on my timeline are
clear and defined whereas the ones on the MPEG4 are more blurry, which look
even worse when projected on a big screen.
I’m used to this with burning onto DVDs, but not on a MPEG4 file, unless
I haven’t been looking closely enough all these years I’ve been using MEP.  I’ve been searching this forum for clues about
what makes the best quality results, and are there some settings which would
help.  I have changed the resolution (from
720 x 480 to 1280 x 720) in the MPEG 4 export dialogue box to match the resolution
on the photos and this had made it a bit better.  But are there any other settings you adjust
when doing this conversion to ensure better quality outcome?  Thankyou for your help.

Here are the specifications of my computer.  I'm using MEP Pro Plus 17.

Greetings,

You say you've changed the resolution in the export box but what preset were you using in the first place?

When I create a slideshow I usually save to WMV - MEP seems to really like that format for some reason and creates good quality video at low(ish) bitrates that look good on my HD TV.

However back to your question. Why not try a preset that gives you the size and bitrate that you want or need. When I have used MP4's, I've use the preset MP4Web (lots of presets are available by checking Display All in the export box).

Just find the one that gives your resolution and fps. You can modify some of the settings using the advanced button. I just change Video Level to 4.1 and uncheck streamable and HTML start file under Multiplexer (don't know if they are important but I've had no complaints so far).

Hi Andy Thankyou so much for your detailed response. I've been using the preset resolution of 720 x 480. I will investigate what you've said and reply in a couple of days.

Thanks to your information Andy W I played around with different settings to see what improves the picture quality the best. When I upped the resolution to 1920x1080 there was a significant difference, plus I made the video level 4.1 as you recommended (not knowing what it does!). It takes much longer to export this file, however, but having the happy customers makes it worth it. I tried Webmp4 the message came up " Can't play. The item is missing or we can't get to it 0x80070002, so I stuck with user defined and that works fine. Thankyou Andy for pointing me in the right direction.
