Rendering a project to MP4 gives me a 0 bytes file

Kraz Posté à 29/04/2020 19:12

This has happened several times. if I try to render a project to MP4 1920x1080 25fps it goes through the rendering process but when I check the file it is 0 bytes. The project contains H264 video recorded with Bandicam. I'm sure this never happened previously before this latest VPX update. WMV works fine.

Hi

. . . . render a project to MP4 1920x1080 25fps it goes through the rendering process but when I check the file it is 0 bytes . . . .

Assuming you have an Intel processor with an integrated GPU then this occurs when using the MainConcept codec with hardware acceleration.

Your options are to turn off hardware acceleration or switch to the Default codec, if you turn off HWA then rendering/exporting will be slower.

Hi

You have the same processor model as I have and by default it should be the GPU that is used for HWA.

Can you confirm which codec is being used in the program settings Import/Export tab.

If it says MainConcept then that is the issue, not the iGPU - the MC codec is 'old' and is not compatible with Intel iGPU's

. . . . I can export WMV with acceleration enabled . . . .

That is correct, however acceleration is not used for WMV - it is used for AVCHD, MP4, and HEVC.

You can check which GPU is being used for MP4 export in the Windows Task Manager Performance tab as shown below for the same export.

It's definitely using the Nvidia GPU when rendering. However if I choose AVCHD-transport stream 1920x1080- 25pal it works. What's the difference between this and the HDTV setting? AVCHD seems to be the default or does it show up because it's a top of the list?

Hi

The image above shows the CPU chart, click the GPU1 option to see the charts for the GTX to see what the activity is on that GPU.

AFAICS from the image the Intel GPU (GPU 0) is doing very little.

AVCHD shows up first in the dropdown because it is the top of the list.

The difference between AVCHD, .m2ts file extension, and HD TV .mp4 file extension is in the codecs used to encode the video.

AVCHD uses the AVC codec to achieve a higher compression (smaller file size) for the same quality image compared to the MP4 which uses the h.264 codec, AVCHD is also the default format used on Blu-Ray discs.

If it says MainConcept then that is the issue, not the iGPU - the MC codec is 'old' and is not compatible with Intel iGPU's

Not entirely - You can export using the MC codec and Intel iGPU and Quick Sync by selecting QS in the Advanced Encoder settings from the Encoder dropdown and changing this from Auto to QS. It will HWA AVCHD transport stream .mts files but not 4k and .MP4 will appear to encode but give a 0MB files, as you have noted Kraz. SW only will work with .MP4 using MC codec

I reported this to Magix support 1 year ago and they said they would draw it to the development team's attention but I am not really expecting them to fix this as they are not really supporting the Main concept encoder over the Intel one.

The activity on your Nvidia will likely be due to your setting Calculate Video Effects on GPU which does more processing on that GPU and takes load off the Intel iGPU.

Can you be sure HWA is actually working on your Intel as a lot members have trouble with this feature?

John your screenshots do not show the full picture because you can not see the Video Encode graph in the left hand one which will show no activity also. The only time you will see any thing on that graph is when the Nvidia is being used to encode HEVC using NVENC.

......AVCHD uses the AVC codec to achieve a higher compression (smaller file size) for the same quality image compared to the MP4 which uses the h.264 codec......

They both use H.264 compression....
