100% CPU usage with Magix Movie Edit Pro 16

cato wrote on 8/21/2011, 7:48 AM

I have no problems using the program but when I burn a DVD I notice that my PC's internal fan starts pulsing at high speed. I have Windows 7 and when I open Task Manager I see that Magix is using almost 100% of CPU power.

Is there any way to reduce the amount of CPU the program uses?

(I have a Dual Processor 3.2GHz with 4Gb Ram, if that helps.)

Hi.

Are you actually "burning" the DVD or is this high CPU usage seen during the "export" phase, i.e. whilst MEP is "preparing" the actual files to burn to DVD?  If it is the latter, high CPU usage is perfectly "normal".  ( I have Win 7 on a quad-core at 3 GHz, 4Gb RAM, and "exporting" video files sends ALL 4 cores to almost 100% AND my cooling fan has to work "overtime" because the CPU operating temperature increases by up to 15 degrees C).

HTH.

Jeff,

As you indicated, the high CPU usage occurs during the pre-burn, preparation phase.

I don't like any program utilizing anywhere near 100% of CPU power and increasing the operating temperature that much.

There should be a way to set the program to only use, for example, 50% of CPU power.

cato,

I understand what you are saying but video export/processing is VERY demanding of the computer and its CPU.  If there was a method which enabled you to "control" how much of your CPU capacity could be used by an particular app, the trade-off would be, I suspect, MUCH longer export/processing time.  On my machine DV export is at least real-time, if not faster; AVCHD, which I also use, is normally up to 1.5 times real time.  When exporting videos of anything up to two hours the additional time required for exporting with lower CPU would, in my opinion, be "a real pain".

As an aside, I see absolutely NO ill-effects from allowing MEP/VPX to use the full CPU available in my computer, and the temperature returns to "normal" almost immediately any processing is completed.

Jeff,

It takes about 25 minutes on my machine to burn a 90 minute DVD. A couple years ago I had a video card overheat and die as a result of DVD burning even though the video card had it's own fan. I don't want to go through that again. If using 50% CPU would mean it would take 50 minutes to burn the DVD I would be happy with that. I want the option to set the usage of the chip.

Thanks for your response. I wish I would have gotten an answer from someone at Magix.

Hi

It can be done however BUT

Quote Microsoft

'Changing the priority ........ can make it run faster or slower (depending on whether you raise or lower the priority), but it can also adversely affect the performance of other processes.'  (my highlight)

Your PC will protect itself from overheating and you will get plenty of warnings if you have the temperature warning turned on in your BIOS (if the settings are there!!)

Thanks, John. I'm going to check my bios settings.

I guess I can live with things the way they are.
