Can't save project under Movie Edit Pro 16

I get the following error message when trying to save a project under Movie Edit Pro 16: "an error occurred while writing the project file"

Exporting the movie works okay, just not saving the project as a whole.  I can't do anything.  I've tried all options - like 'save as', 'backup copy', etc.

Just in case this is relevant - the program runs fine on my main Windows 7 computer. The problem is on my Vista Home Premium laptop. I have installed it (minimal installation) on the laptop only temporarily so I choose not to activate it during the installation process. Could that be the problem? If so, is there a way to activate it without closing the program? I can't see an option to do so.

Could it, otherwise, be a file that didn't load properly on installation?  If so, does anyone have a clue as to which one its likely to be? Presumably I will find it on the program DVD and I could try copying it into the appropriate directory. I realise that doesn't stand much chance of success but I am really hoping to be able to save the project, somehow, before closing the program.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

Pepsipops,

I'd guess the problem is MEP trying to write to a file (maybe an '.ini' file rather than your project) that Vista, in its infinite wisdom, has decided is a 'protected' area of your hard drive and only available to the operating system. Did you install MEP as Administrator or as an ordinary user? Windows 7 is supposed to be more sensible letting you do things with temporary administrator's rights.

A suggestion would be to go to 'File' >> 'Backup copy' >> 'Copy project and media into folder' so that you have a copy of your project somewhere -- perhaps on an external drive so it's easy to transfer to your main computer.

Hope this helps,

Carl

Hi Carl,

Many thanks for getting back to me.

I had simply installed MEP through my user account but that account has Administrator rights so I would have thought it should have been okay.  I've experienced no problems with other software installed on the laptop.  However, your response prompted me to check and I see that Vista can present UAC issues.  I don't remember whether or not I got the pop-up "consent" box but doubtless the 'Save' problem with MEP is connected with its installation somehow.  I really must get Vista off that machine!

I had already tried all the 'Save' options, including 'File' >> 'Backup copy' >> 'Copy project and media into folder' onto an external hard drive, to no avail.

It looks like I will lose the 'project' but at least I have the completed video.  I will just have to try putting the individual files back together if I need to make any changes to it that can't be done with a simple edit.

Before you give up...

MEP should have been creating automatic backup files named 'whatever_your_name_BAK0.MV_', BAK1, BAK2 etc. See if you can move the most recent of them -- and all your recources, clips, images, etc -- to another machine. You can load it from a file >> resotre backup option or just rename it to 'whatever_your_name.MVP'.

Regards,

Carl
