Generally it's best to have your movie settings the same as your source.  If you don't know the specifics of the source, download the fee Media Info and check out your source.  You can then set your movie settings to the same.

You can do some changes, e.g., output 16:9 vs 4:3 source, or the other way around.  However you should have you movie settings match what the output is going to be or you are liable to get some distortions, especially in transitions and title.

PS - What do you mean by "glitches"?

Thanks David . We did work out it was a setting we had changed that was causing the problem. We were trying to get the best quality and smallest file size, as the clips we had taken were in full HD but the mixed down clips were taking too long to upload to You tube, so we tried manually altering a few settings, to try and reduce the file size and messed something up. We ended up resetting it to factory defaults and exporting as MP4, that seemed to be a reasonable compromise between file size and quality. They came out in 720 HD rather than the full 1080.

I'm not really all that familiar with all the movie settings and what they mean... At the moment I am transferring some old VCR tapes to dvd and I am not really sure what are the best settings to use to get the best quality in this process, any tips appreciated...

Sorry for not getting back to you sooner. It’s been so many years and MEP versions since I’ve messed with VHS that I’m not much help here.  You’re not going to be able to do much in the export dialog; VHS is VHS.  The default settings are good for DVD output.  I’m still using MEP16+ so don’t know if the export options are still the same in MEP17.  There is one option that allows you to move a slider from low to high quality, so go high with that.  Also bumping your video bit rate to 10 can help, but creates a larger file.  If you have auto fit to DVD on, the program will adjust the bit rate back down if it’s too high and creates a file too big for the disk.

While still in the editing stage, I think there is a filter in the proDAD plugin that comes with the plus version that does some quality corrections for VHS.  Also I’ve heard there are some free correction/enhancement filters for Virtual Dub that can be used in proDAD.  I looked at this years ago when I was in the process of capturing over 20 home VHS tapes and decided the time and effort wasn’t worth it.  My main goal was just to get the tapes in digital format before the tapes became unusable.

Hopefully someone who has done recent work with VHS will chime in with suggestions.
