For a Mini-DV camera you need a Firewire cable. There are 2 types, 4pin/4pin for a Laptop, and 4pin/6pin for a stationary PC (normally). Hope you have Firewire contact on your PC. Then you can transfer (capture) the file to the PC with MEP.
Most camcorders come with software and cables for transfering to computer. If you have a DV cable to hookup between your camera and computer...you can start a new progect, choose the "record audio/video" in the "file pull-down menu. Then choose the "DV" setting . This will recognize your camera and guide you through the transfer.
DV camcoder use a firewire cable to link to a computer, the computer must have a firewire port on the board or you can buy a firewire card to install in a PCI slot.
Old laptop before Windows 7 offer a firewire input using a special mini connector firewire cable.
New laptop designed for Windows 7 HAS NO firewire input because Windows 7 focus on the USB 2.0 and the new USB 3.0 port.
If you have the proper cable and card you can use the software coming with your camera to capture video file or use directly the Magix software to capture the video file.
Any way I recommend to install the software coming with the camera sometime useful to test your setup.
