How do I use the software without a serial number?

The installation program says I do not need the serial number to use the software, but it will not let me use it without entering the serial number. How do I use it without the serial number when the software closes the program unless I enter the serial number?

I have long ago lost both the case (which the software says has the serial number on it) and the receipt for the program. I do have the original software disc, not a copy.

I am trying to reinstall the software in a new PC since the last one had a hard drive crash that is not recoverable.
