Nathan,

Go to 'File' >> 'Settings' >> 'Program settings' >> 'Video/Audio' tab >> 'Standard picture length' to set default length. You can set it to either seconds or frames. The location of this setting may be a bit different depending on your program version but the shortcut for program settings is the [Y] key.

You don't have to add images one at a time to the timeline. You can select a group or all in the media pool and insert them in one go. But note -- they go in in the order they are sorted in the media pool so make sure you alpha sort if your images are sequentially numbered and use leading zeros else '10' will come before '9'. Starting with '000000' will give you more than an hour at 25fps.

I've found that MEP can become overwhelmed by thousands of images and have been using 'VirtualDub' to do 'frameserving'. Basically this program take all your images produces a dummy file which MEP treats as video. Alwyn has a guide here: http://www.aaproductions.net/mep/index.htm For images just load the first one and Vdub will bring in all the rest.
