Imported file cuts existing object on timeline

hdrechsel18 wrote on 5/20/2025, 9:16 AM

I'm using Movie Studio 2024 Suite, and all of a sudden, I'm having a problem when I import another file on top of an existing track. For some reason the new file deletes that portion of the original file below it. The attached example shows the problem I'm having when I import a .jpeg (doesn't matter what file type) onto track three. It cuts and deletes the file on track one and two. And if I have objects on other tracks, it does the same to all of them. This is the first time I've had this happen, so I'm kinda stumped on what I may have done different.

I have looked everywhere, and I'm probably missing something I may have toggled by accident (?). This is killing my current project, so any help will be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance. Harry D

I think I found the problem: even though I had seen the Insert Mode checked on #1 (automatic), I unchecked it, then checked it again. Bingo! It seemed to reset, and now I can import as always.

Sorry to have bothered you (I'm getting old lol). Simple solution I overlooked because I saw #1 checked when I first looked for the solution and didn't think I had to reset it.

Thanks. Harry D

@hdrechsel18 Hi, you shouldn't have to reset it, it seems for whatever reason it was not reactivating when you ticked it after you've previously changed it or as you imply, 'I may have toggled by accident', you may have misread something..

Thank you Gid. Just one of those things that drove me nuts. I've been using Magix video editors for years, and this is the first time I've run across this. Been working on my project feverishly for the last two weeks - maybe I need a break lol.

@hdrechsel18 Yep, as you prob know if you've been working with software on a project for some time things can get mixed up a bit, sometimes buttons don't do what they should or simply stop working, it shouldn't happen but it does with all software. 🤷‍♂️😒 The same applies for the human operating it 😂👍

@hdrechsel18

HI

The most likely scenario for this behaviour is you have accidentally changed the Mouse mode insert actions by hitting the appropriate keyboard shortcut, top row of numbers, not the keypad, these are:

Single track ripple (insert) - shortcut: 2

Multi track ripple (insert) - shortcut: 3

Both the above options will split an existing video/image/audio object if you drop another video/image/audio on top of it.

Pressing the 1 key resets these to Automatic

There are 2 other insert actions:

Swap - shortcut: 4

Overwrite - shortcut: 5

They do not split an existing object, however their behaviours are slightly different.

I would suggest you look up Keyboard Shortcuts in the PDF manual.

Thanks John. That makes perfect sense because I've been working on sizing and positioning my video content. So I've been entering a lot of numbers. My mouse may have been over the Insert Mode icon without even noticing, but when I looked, #1 was checked. Whatever - now I know to correct it and pay more attention.

Thanks again. Harry D.
