When I try and import direct from the video camera the message say's 'cannot connect to video camera'. I have downloaded it into the Sony software but it then takes so long to change the format to load into Magix 15. Any suggestions please?
Why should it? This camera has no tape!!!
The Video is still in a file on the sd card of your camera.
Use the Sony software to download the file on your PC. Then go to the mediapool in VDL and choose your videofile to use it in the timline. Drag & Drop.

You are right, but sometimes the original Software to transfer the files to the PC does more. It sometimes fix corrupt files on the SD Card.
So if there are problems with the video file, use the originl software to copy it from the camcorder to the PC.
Hi brianparish,
when you connect using the recording screen option then this
would only work using firewire. Your camera has USB output?
If so attach your camera via USB, then in the explorer in the Edit window of
the program, it should show as a drive. Click on this, locate the files and
drag and drop them onto the timeline.
You should probably copy the videos directly onto your hard drive because when you use the file browser and drag and drop it will import onto your hard drivve and it's faster that way. But you should totally use the software that is included because you wouldn;t really know what video is which.
