Magix MovEdPro (17) - is it possible to save a completed disc movie (DVD or AVCHD or BD) to the PC harddrive as a folder (VIDEO_TS or BDMV) instead of directly to disc media?

Most software apps for editing, rendering and creating video discs have the option to render to a folder on the PC as well as burn to optical drive. This is useful for making sure the operation works before committing a blank DVD-R or BD-R to a possible failure and making a coaster, wasting a disc. The folder can then be written to the blank disc if it's successful. I see no option for this in the Burn Menu in Movie Edit Pro.

The default location for disc images is set under 'File' >> 'Settings' >> 'Program...' on the 'Folder' tab.

Thanks, but I don't have that "Disc Image" option show up in my pull-down menu under Burner:

I'm using Version 17 (2010) of the program. I checked the documentation (PDF manual) and it makes no mention of a "burn to disc image file" function.

Double checked and I definitely have a disc image entry under MEP 17 Plus (on my old machine). Do you have the folder for images setting option under program settings? Disc image is a regular topic here particularly in the context of making multiple copies of a DVD without having to re-encode each time. Yours is the first instance of the image recorder being missing!

A possible workaround is to do a regular burn but simply don't put in any blank disc. When prompted to do so exit and search your hard drive for the files. On this machine they would be here: C:\Users\User\Documents\MAGIX\Movie Edit Pro 2014 Premium\Disc Images

Hopefully someone else will have a solution soon.

Hi,

Like Carl, I have the Image Recorder option in that drop-down and that's been true in all versions I can recall. That creates an ISO file in the folder you specify.

However, I always prefer to create a DVD (VOB) folder (Carl's 'workaraound'), which I then play, usually in VLC, just as if it was a DVD player.

After that you will then find your DVD folder in the location Carl described:

And once I'm happy I then use ImgBurn to write that reliably to a DVD.

Can you confirm which version of Movie Edit Pro you have - and is it the Basic, Plus or Premium version?

Which version of Windows is on your computer?

The reason I ask is that the image of the burn screen below looks more like that of Movie Edit Pro 14  and does not look like that of the MEP 17 Plus or Premium burn screens on my installations - see below - also mine do not have the Online album option.

Thanks guys. I did a test burn of a small (less than 4.5GB) AVCHD project to see if it works, written to a DVD-RW disc. I did find the BDMV folder where it belonged, in the Disc_Image folder, but no .ISO file, just the folder & contents as they appear on the disc itself.

The Prgm Settings/Path Settings menu shows the location of the folder for Disc Image. Curiously, no listing for Audio or Image Editor apps. (I have MEP 14 on an older WinXP machine and they are both there.)

As for system and app infor: It's a 2009 Gateway PC with AMD Phenom X4 (Quad core) 64-bit CPU, 6 GB RAM, 650 GB HDD, NVIDIA GeForce 8400 GS GPU, running Windows 7 64-bit Home Premium.

I do have Magix MEP v17 HD (2010) installed from a DVD-ROM "made in Germany."

It's much faster and more tolerant of a greater variety of codecs and file formats than MEP14, and easier to use with HD videos (1280x720; 1440x1080; 1920x1080). Apparently, AVCHD discs don't allow for animated chapter thumbnail buttons, but the Burn Disc options don't specify that. I learned the hard way it can't be done.

I've yet to try the Burn function with no disc in the optical drive, in order to just get the rendered video folder on the PC drive - does it stop the operation AFTER those .VOB and .M2TS files are written? If it aborts with "no disc present" before those are saved to the HDD it won't help.

Hi

I think the reason you do not have the Image recorder is because your version of MEP 17 is the Basic edition which IIRC does not have this function, or support the Audio and Image editor links - it also explains why your dialogs look different.

I have removed the image of the Info screen because it is showing your serial number - never post serial numbers, account information or other confidential information in the forum.

John, I've managed to use the work-around by keeping the DVD-R tray empty. It creates the BDMV folder for AVCHD/BD, and the .VOB and .IFO files (without the VIDEO_TS folder) in the Disc Image location so that's fine. After rendering it requests a blank disc be inserted into the burner, but I can just cancel that.

Now there's another issue: trying to navigate the Menu Edit features without getting an error message like this:

In the Menu maker screen, there are options for Static or Animated backgrounds and thumbnails. Also for loading a background audio file to play.

I tried using Animated selection for a standard DVD, and it failed to render. Changed it to Static with plain default background and it worked. Don't have this issue with MEP 14+; I don't know why it won't work for MEP 17. The check boxes for various parameters are confusing; don't know what combo of settings is correct. There's no warning msg if conflicts are set.

What I want is: static image bkgnd, animated thumbnail chapter buttons, and looping audio/video of 20 seconds (the length of the audio file). So far I've had no luck with any kind of anim setting.

Is it possible my "basic" version of MEP 17 doesn't support it even though it's showing as an option here?

Yes, it writes the folder and files and then stops when you click Cancel.

The error message has nothing to do with navigating the menus - it appears because you have aborted the final stage of the burn process ie the writing of the files to DVD.

I presume you mean you selected to animate the menu button and it failed to render ie you saw no change - if so and you have already rendered the video previously, you should have had a popup menu with options as shown below

 

If you did not get this, and you have already rendered the video previously, then the burn process was not started.

If you did get this, it is best to select the Encode all and both Rewrite options  otherwise the existing files will be used and you may see no difference.

As far as I can see animated chapter buttons are not possible they are static images taken from the movie - only the main menu buttons can be animated ie show short excerpts of the movie.

I didn't abort the burning process, the program did - it stopped while doing Step 4/4: rendering the Menu as stated on the error popup. "Menu encoding failed." This was before it started writing to the optical media. I'm speaking of "navigating" the Menu Editor/Creator settings, not navigating a finished movie menu (with a remote or cursor).

One of the options is "Create Animated Menu Buttons." I know this feature exists since it's present on MEP 14. During the menu display loop, each thumbnail of a clip/chapter runs a short sequence from that video inside the button frame. It's not a static frame-grab of the clip, unless that option is selected. That's how all the other PC video editors I've used works, including prior versions of Magix Video DeLuxe/MEP. I think it's an encoding problem while trying to render the anims on a single menu page. Maybe they all have to be the same video format?

In answer to your last question, it would be best to upgrade to MEP2014 Plus or Premium. Xara, part of the Magix family, currently has a special price of 50$ for the Plus edition. It has surround sound capability.

If you upgrade, keep version 17 on you computer in case you need to go back and also to bring forward any discontinued features and effects into the new version.

Thanks for clearing that issue, the confusion arose because this was not stated in the post and it was assumed that the error message was a result of you cancelling the write process.

Without knowing the specific template you used, I suspect you are using one of the ones which were buggy.

According to your post this is MEP 14 Plus, this is not comparing like with like particularly as there were significant changes in the program with the release of version 15.

In this respect I agree wth browj2 - you should consider upgrading to MEP 2014 Plus or Premium - my preference is Premium - all the codecs, with the exception of one or two specialist ones, are included - you still have to activate them though.

Also, "...I just discovered MEP 17 HD..."  in the additional info. This thread concerns MEP 17 HD, not MEP 14 Plus, which I already have (incl. Dolby 5.1) on a separate PC from 2003 running Win XP SP3.

My current PC is a Win 7 x64 system, and I just bought MEP 17 last week. In working with it I've found a redesigned Menu Option screen that's causing confusion regarding Animated chapter buttons and looping audio tracks. The lack of 5.1 audio's not a big deal, and not worth spending another $50 for MEP 14 Plus that I already own

I've also learned that AVCHD does not support animated menus, although the choices listed in the menu templates in MEP suggest it does. This is the programmers' oversight.

This isn't a major malfunction, just a quirk in the app that doesn't exist in MEP 14 Plus. Despite this, version 17 HD has advantages, especially in speed and power in handling HD videos above 1280x720 and importing various codecs.
