MEP MX cannot connect to my USB webcam, other software does. WIn 10

NJKatwoman wrote on 11/18/2021, 8:03 PM

I purchased a USB webcam so that I could make good recordings of crochet tutorials. MEP MX cannot connect to the device. I installed old software from Pinnacle 12, and it had no problem connecting to my webcam. I need to take closeup and clear videos when I make a crochet tutorial. I am using Windows 10, fully updated. Also, I was unable to use my Galaxy Note 8 Android as a webcam either. If you look at the channel BagODay crochet on YouTube, you will see what I am trying to accomplish. And she uses her phone to make her tutorials!! I have purchased MEP Products for years, and I am supremely disappointed that it cannot handle a simple task of recording with a USB webcam, yet 10 year old software can?! Even an old version of Cyberlink found my webcam!

Hi NJ.

It is true and on the forum we have seen some people with problems using USB webcams with Movie Edit Pro. Normally this has been found to be down to the drivers the webcam is using. Some webcams do work apparently but I have no idea which ones. Maybe someone else can suggest one that does. Also Movie Edit Pro MX is an old version and may not be able to use the Webcam. It is difficult to know the precise cause without computer specs along with Windows version and build information.

Personally I would not use Movie Edit Pro for screen recording as the results are often soft looking and is not my favorite method of screen capture.

Personally I would use (and do use) a screen capture program. They also have their own problems when importing the resulting footage into MEP but can be overcome by tweaking the recording settings. There are a lot of competent screen capture programs out there and some are free to use.

I looked at BagODay crochet on YouTube and she uses several cameras. ( I counted at least three).

I suspect when she uses her phone she records to the phone and transfers the files onto her computer. The webcam footage could be recorded with a screen capture program as I suggested.

Ray.

Hi

. . . . MEP MX . . . Windows 10, fully updated. . . . .

Movie Edit Pro is a 32 bit program and requires 32 bit webcam drivers to be able to connect to the webcam, if you let Windows 10 install the drivers for the web cam they will be the 64 bit version which are not compatible with the MEP MX.

What make/model is the webcam?

BagODay showed her setup, and it was just her phone. My laptop doesn't even recognize my Galaxy Note 8, I used to be able to plug in a phone and the laptop would automatically suck the pictures and videos out.

MEP MX Pro wasn't cheap, and when I was trucking, I didn't have much time to use it. Now, I am off the road and trying to supplement my income by building a YouTube subscriber base and getting monetized. I have to be able to place the camera on the table, close to my hands. I tried a regular digital camera, with a tripod, but I could not get good footage. All the tech that was one fairly simple has become overly complicated, and I am very frustrated!

Hi Assuming you have this camera then the product description says it does not use a driver.

If you can get the camera to show on your screen then try launching MEP but don't use the record webcam option but use the Capture screen option and see if that works.

@NJKatwoman, @CubeAce

Hi

All devices use a driver of some form in Windows either provided by the manufacturer or they rely on a generic Windows driver.

That is the camera you have found, however it is unfortunate that this is a generic device sold under 2 different brand names on Amazon and has no drivers provided - it is stuck with what Windows has and AFAICS there is no generic 32 bit driver, that I would trust the source of, available.

. . . . I tried a regular digital camera, with a tripod, but I could not get good footage. . . .

This would be the preferable way to go providing the camera records video at a high enough resolution.

What is the make/model of the camera and the issue with the footage?

. . . . I installed old software from Pinnacle 12, and it had no problem connecting to my webcam. . . .

This would be the second viable way - if you can record in Pinnacle, save the video as 1080p a common format and edit in MEP MX.

Yes, I had tried that already, but with no success. I even downloaded 32 bit drivers for Windows 10. I have been working on trying to solve this issue since I received the camera 2 days ago. I have an old copy of Power Director 14, and it found the USB webcam right away. I suspect my Pinnacle software, which is also quite old, will have no problems. Movie Edit Pro MX Plus is the newest editing software that I own, so naturally, I am deeply disappointed that this high resolution webcam will not work with it.

Thank you for all of your suggestions however. I probably will not invest any more money in upgrades if the webcam will not work with MEP.
