Movie with rotated content gets clipped on export (no ratio issue)

phonebooth wrote on 1/6/2020, 4:04 PM

I am using Video Pro X (version 17.0.3.63) on Win 10.

I have created a movie in 16:9 (1920 x 1080), which runs absolutely fine in playback mode.

This is what it looks like (and SHOULD look like) in playback - note that the inner content is actually a 9:16 movie, but rotated by 90%, so the black areas to both sides are still as intended and not the issue):

However, when exporting, the result will show only a part of the video image - both the ratio and resolution of the "outer" movie seen to be correct, but it appears that the "inner" content is both shifted to the right and clipped by approx. 70%:

(note that mainly the candle is visible, but the rest like the piano and the person are missing):

Please note that ...

- I've triple-checked that export settings match the movie settings (i.e. ratio / resolution of 16:9 / 1920x1080)

- It makes no difference what export format I choose (I tried with MVX, MPEG-2 and MPEG-4, all of them with identical effect)

2 more screenshots showing my movie and export settings - I just can't find ANYTHING here that might explain the issue:

Any help is highly appreciated, as this is a frustrating "killer" for me! I've just started using my freshly licensed Pro X a couple of days ago, and now already this issue makes it useless for me. I really hope to get this resolved.

Thanks in advance!

[Post Edit]

Meanwhile I found out that rotating my movie content back by 90 deg (so that it matches the ratio of the movie) will get rid of the clipping!

While this doesn't solve my problem (as I need the movie in correct rotation), it still gives a hint what might be the cause.

I've created the movie in multicam editing, i.e. the rotation of the source material was applied prior to multicam cutting to each of the source clips. Maybe I did something wrong that way??

@phonebooth

Surely if you have rotated a landscape video into a portrait mode video your width has now become your height so you need a new longer width setting to retain your 16:9 ratio and resolution?

[Edit]

Not needed.

I've just tried this myself in MEP Premium (Not Pro X) by opening a new project at the highest resolution I could at the videos frame rate and then imported the video to rotate. Used the rotate tool to get the rotation and then used the size position tool to fit the file into position making sure I pressed the centering buttons for both width and height and exported at the highest resolution which was . 3840 x 2160 and the file looked good so tried a 1920 x 1080 export. That too looked fine although my footage was looking odd as it was shot in landscape mode.

Maybe it is the multi-cam mode that is the problem as I used the basic method of using MEP.

Hi

. . . . the rotation of the source material was applied prior to multicam cutting to each of the source clips. Maybe I did something wrong that way . . . .

Did you try the rotation after using the multicam function, applying it to the clip that is on track 1?

@CubeAce, @johnebaker

Dear both,

thanks alot for your replies!

The quick answer right away: The issue is solved. I was only half aware that there are two methods of rotating - and I 'd obviously chosen the wrong one.

The option at the bottom of the window seemed more convenient to me, as it automatically resizes the clip to fit the screen. But for some reason it behaves buggily on export.

The correct - though less convenient - way seems to be as described by @CubeAce: Use the upper option, then apply the appropriate size manually.

I don't really understand neither why there are two separate options nor why the second one behaves so strangely. But now I know how to fix it.

Last, just for completeness...

Did you try the rotation after using the multicam function, applying it to the clip that is on track 1?

John EB

No, I applied it beforehand. This is recommended in each and any of the tutorials. Otherwise I'd have to rotate each and any part of the cutting separately. ;-)

So, thanks again for your help!

@phonebooth

I don't think there is a correct or wrong way to do things, just choices as in such large programs there is normally more than one way to achieve an effect. Some of the effects have been known and reported to drift or resize themselves in operation so you may have discovered a bug. I just tried the first method I thought of and it worked. Maybe I was just lucky.
