MP3 files skipping / glitching when opened ...

Hello all!

Using Sound Forge Pro 18 on a Widows 11 Home PC

Im having an issue with skipping / glitching on MP3 files.

On a VBR file, it does it consistently every few seconds.

On a 320 file, it only happens within the 1st few seconds of playback, but the track itself sounds glitchy / choppy all through.

I did notice that the skipping / glitching is less when I am zoomed out, but the more I zoom in, the worse the problem is.

I tried wav files and they seem to be fine.

Can anyone help?

Thanks!

John

@johnfarruggio

Preferences, General tab, enable "Always proxy compressed formats",

Audio skipping and repeating. This problem has been happening on the past few versions of SF Pro. I'm currently working with Audio Studio 17 (17.0.2 Build 109), but it was the case with SF Pro 16 (16.1.4 Build 71). I have a RME Fireface UFX II. Audio skips/repeats on WAV and MP3 formats. Not sure about other formats because I don't use them or convert to/from them.

Have tried the ASIO MADIface USB driver as well as the Microsoft Wave Mapper and the Windows Classic Wave Driver. I have tried various buffer settings. I have checked Always Proxy Compressed Formats.

Nothing seems to fix it.

@Bill-Fike You might want to uninstall the Magix Low Latency audio driver included in Sound Forge Audio Studio. This is an old version of ASIO4ALL and it's known that it will create problems for some users, but not for everyone. Usually, you'll get problems with static noise. But maybe it creates glitches in your audio during playback.

If you want to uninstall Magix Low Latency you can press the Windows key + R on your computer keyboard, and type REGEDIT in the Open field:

Then navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SOFTWARE > ASIO > Magix Low Latency 2016:

Now, simply right click the Magix Low Latency 2016 folder, and delete it.

Then restart your computer. Please select the Restart option and not the Shut down option.

I hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply! Per your instructions, I deleted it and restarted. The issue persists. It is not static. When beginning to play a file, it will repeat a second or so into it. As it continues to play, it seems to be OK.

@Bill-Fike If I understood you correctly, this also happens with pure WAV files? That's odd. You can try to reset the program settings under the File menu. But I'm not sure this will help, because it happens both in Sound Forge Pro 16 and Sound Forge Audio Studio 17.

Maybe there is something "broken" in your Windows installation. For example, Sound Forge might work without problems on another computer. This could point to this issue.

Windows has a way to check it's own integrity. To do this, open cmd.exe as administrator (it's best to enter cmd in the Windows search and then right-click the search result to start as administrator), type DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth and press Enter.

Windows will now get an up-to-date restore image from the Microsoft servers.

If this is done type sfc /scannow and press Enter.

Windows will now check its system files and tries to repair them by using the new image.

@Bill-Fike Please also check in the Windows Energy Options and that your computer doesn't run in energy saving mode and doesn't has USB port energy saving enabled. This might interfere with external USB audio interface.

This is curious. I don't think I had done anything beyond what I had previously described. But when I checked a WAV file, it played OK. Then I went into MP3 and again checked "Always proxy compressed formats," and then it played OK. I'll watch this and see where it goes.

Thanks for engaging with me on this!

@Bill-Fike

You might try experimenting with the playback buffer setting.

as SP stated, the Magix low latency driver has been known to to cause problems., sometimes, system wide

Thanks. Presently I'm using the Madiface Driver at 1024 samples, and it's working OK. I have played with lower settings.
