My first project- Can`t download videos from youtube

joserobles1941 wrote on 4/9/2015, 8:32 PM

My son sends me videos via my mail of my grandson which are dubbed private -  seen only by family members.

I have copied the url and tried to downlooad them with the program atube catcher but there is this 404 error every time.  I want to make one video using that material and give it to him as a surprise.   That is the reason I can^t  ask him for help so I hope that here I can find the solution.

I  will appreciate your help on this.

José Robles

PS.  I am using Movie Edit Pro 2015

Hi José,

Assuming you can play the video OK directly from YouTube then the problem presumably lies in atube catcher, or the way you're using it. Can you successfully download other videos with it? If not, try an alternative downloader. With Firefox I occasionally use DownloadHelper. But for both FF and IE and other browsers there are many choices.

Alternatively, if you can send me a private message with the link (and any necessary other information I'd need to play it), I'll try it myself when I get back home this evening, or tomorrow morning. What's the deadline for you to send it to him?

Hi

Further to Terry's answer - Firefox has a specific plugin available for downloading video - called Youtube video and audio downloader.

However some videos are restricted from downloading and it may be that this is so with those marked Private.

Thank you both for your reply

I usually download videos using atube catcher with no problem.  As to the deadline, I have plenty of time.  I am planning on completing it by his birthday, a few months ahead.  Since I am new using Movie Edit and this being my first project,  I am aware it will be quite some time before I have enough knowledge and practice before doing it right.

Allow me please Terry to try both suggestions and if they don¨t work I will resort to you kind offer.}

All the best and thanks again

Hi José,

I presume that you can at least view the video. If nothing else works, then you might want to try capturing it using a screen capture program. There is one in MEP2015.

Did you get the Plus or Premium version (it will say so at the upper left of the screen) or the basic version of MEP2015?

Hi John,

Yes, I can view the videos.  I am using the basic version of  MEP2015 but I am planning on upgrading to either the Plus or Premium version in a few more days.  You see I am an old timer, 74 years old, and my hardware is barely up to the requirements.  I still use Windows XP but will have Windows 7 on a newer pc in three more days.

I don¨t know if the basic version has the screen capture you mention ;  I will look for it and if it does, I will use it.

Thanks

José,

Click on the red Record button at the bottom of the preview monitor. A screen will appear. Select Screen and set up the parameters. You may need to read up on this in the manual.

@ Jose

Screen recording is not available in the Basic version.

. . . . . planning on upgrading to either the Plus or Premium version . . . . .

I would advise you to get the Premium version

Thanks to all for your advise.

Guess it is better for me to wait until everything is in place, that is upgrading to Premium ( thanks for the advise John ) and installing Windows 7 on my pc with an additional harddisc.  Then I will be able to try what I have been told.

I expect to have it ready by  the end of this coming week.

I also want to mention that I was unable to download the Youtube Video and Audio Downloader nor was I able to access to your link - Signature block- Terry.

José,

Never heard back from you after my PM three days ago. Did you get it?

Hi Terry,

No I did not get it.   Before posting this answer,  I have reviewed my mail , including the deleted ones.

In my latest post, however, I mention that I could not get access to your email address (signature block, right?).

I can only say that the least thing in my mind would be to be rude and not answer your mail.

Hi José,

The sig block, which is publicly accessible,  does not contain my email address. That's why I was suggesting PM, where I would tell you what it is!

I don't know why you cannot see it in your PM section, under your Inbox tab. It appears here under my Sent tab. So maybe you could instead now try sending me a PM, to terrypin.
