My videos are not showing up properly in the preview area - audio and stills only - is this a setting or my computer?

Hi

I am using Magix Movie Edit Pro 17 Plus (download version) on a Windows 7 laptop (4gb ram, t6500 cpu 2.10Ghz).  I have some videos I have recorded on my basic Sony Camcorder (.mpgs), which I am wanting to put together with titles, effects, photos etc.).

However, when I press play on the preview area although I can hear the audio of the footage, the picture remains stationary.  If I move the starting point along manually, the picture changes to the correct image, but when I press play it stays at the same picture.  Also, when I use the top right area to browse my other .mpgs and press play, they do not show up in the preview area.  The CPU monitor at the bottom doesn't seem to indicate it is overly taxed.  It will be difficult to make 'movies' though if I can't see what I'm doing.  When I export (eg to .avi) it exports correctly and is viewable in WMP with no problems.

Is this something to do with my system, or as a newbie have I simply missed a basic point of how to preview the movies I'm putting together.  Also, how do I control the preview panel - change between just showing one track or showing the whole thing.

Hope this makes sense.

Thanks for your time.

Hi

Try changing these settings first     I would suggest Overlay Mixer first.

Then try these    in combination with above.

Thanks for your time - this definitely helps.  It is still jerky, but at least I can see it now.  Changing the top one from 'hardware acceleration' seems to have made the most difference - is there a specific pairing of these settings that works best with lower standard laptops?

If I buy a new laptop at some point (still with a very limited budget!) is there a particular 'minimum' graphics card or other feature I should look out for?

Thanks.

Hi

Try changing these settings to decrease the choppiness.

Personally I would save my money and get a PC with more power than try using a laptop for video editing, especially for HD video.  I do use a laptop (Sony high spec dual core)  for editing while on holiday but it is not as good as my PC.
