I have a pretty old machine (Pentium 4 HT 1.8GHz). I have been editing HD video in video in MEP 17 using mpg proxy files without any problems.

In MEP MX, you will need to use mp4 proxy files. MEP MX does not do too well with the mpg proxy files but does great with the mp4 proxy files.
