sound waves

When you import a video with sound, it loads up on the first and second track, the video being the first track and the audio being the second track. On the second track, the audio track, you see a line going straight through the middle. If there is any sounds, you can tell where the sounds begin by the sound waves you see on the second track. However, ever since the second time i started the program, the second track shows no sound waves, only a straight line through the center. I can't tell where the sound starts and ends on my audio tracks and this makes it 100 times harder for me to crop out the soundless parts so i can sync up another track with it. How do i make the sound waves reappear on the audio tracks?

Right Click the sound area, that should open a dialog window, the first or second option is show wave form, that will show you the audio.

The reason this might not happen from the start is that the graphic file for the audio takes up resources, so the program tries to eliminate areas it can to save on performance.
