Video Pro X 11 Crashes Every 5 Minutes

  • Software: Video Pro X 11
  • OS: Windows 10 22H2
  • RAM: 32 GB
  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 3900X
  • GPU: Nvidia RTX 2070 Super (8GB)

Whenever I attempt to use Video Pro X, I get approximately 5 minutes of use before the entire program crashes and closes itself. It does not stop responding, it simply closes itself. I open it back up, get another 5 minutes or so of editing done, it closes itself again. This occurs even if I am not actively doing anything and / or have nothing loaded in the timeline. If i open the program and do literally nothing, it will still crash in approx 5 minutes.

The strange thing is- it occasionally will remain open without issue. If i am trying to export a video, i will make repeated attempts- reopening the program and exporting again until the program stays on for the entire export. This typically takes 50+ attempts. Once the program stays open long enough to export, it will remain open indefinitely. I usually just keep it open in the background so I dont have to deal with the export slot machine again...

I have tried enabling and disabling hardware acceleration. I have tried showing and hiding news. I have tried clean installs of GPU drivers. All of which I have seen as solutions on other similar but different issues in the forums. Nothing has worked...

I understand Video Pro X 11 is an old version but its great when it actually stays open. I dont really want to upgrade and i feel i shouldn't have to upgrade to fix this bug that is (hopefully) unintentional.

Hi.

Have you tried rolling back your nvidia driver to a much earlier version?

Hi

. . . . I dont really want to upgrade and i feel i shouldn't have to upgrade to fix this bug that is (hopefully) unintentional.. . .

I do not think this is a bug, and nor would it be fixed if it was.

VPX 11 is old software and, due to its lack of modern GPU support and the PC not having an Intel CPU with integrated HD520 or better iGPU, should be considered obsolete with respect to modern GPU's such as the RTX 2060 which could lead to:

. . . . If i am trying to export a video, i will make repeated attempts- reopening the program and exporting again until the program stays on for the entire export. This typically takes 50+ attempts. . . . .

Assuming you are importing/exporting to h.264 or h.265 encoded with a maximum resolution of 4K UHD (3840 x 2160)

In VPX 11 program settings, Display options tab set the Video mode second option to Microsoft basic renderer to see if this fixes the crashing.

IMHO you would be better off upgrading to a modern version of VPX.

Fair enough, i didn't really consider this. It is just strange to me that it occasionally works without issue. And truth be told, I'm a little salty that when I made a support ticket, they simply said my version is no longer supported and didn't offer any help or explanation...

Assuming you are importing/exporting to h.264 or h.265 encoded with a maximum resolution of 4K UHD (3840 x 2160)

I use footage h.264 encoded at 1080p resolution. But the crashes occur even when nothing is imported in the timeline. Even if I am simply lingering on the new / load project window, it will crash.

In VPX 11 program settings, Display options tab set the Video mode second option to Microsoft basic renderer to see if this fixes the crashing.

Giving this a shot. I will report back and let you know how it goes.

Thank you very VERY much for your help. I've been dealing with this issue for quite a while and it is quite frustrating as you can imagine. Hoping this does the trick!!

Hi.

In the end user licence agreement Magix only supplies support for one year from date of purchase.

Personally I feel that if it was working in the past then the program hasn't changed but something in the software it runs on has that may no longer be compatible with the program. If it's a driver then changing the program to only use the CPU should at least stop the crash. That may not be a practical solution from a playback and rendering point of view but may point to where the problem lies.

Also, does it crash with an empty project?

Have you set your antivirus to ignore scanning the program's folders?

I'm just thinking if anything has changed on software side of things other than the program that may cause problems.

HI Ray

. . . . If it's a driver then changing the program to only use the CPU should at least stop the crash. . . .

VPX has the old Display options tab which does not have the three Import, Processing and Export options, CPU is not on the single option list.

@MegaMooer

Hi

You may find VPX 11 has the option - Compatibility mode (video for Windows) instead of the Microsoft basic renderer name I gave you previously.

This option will do what Ray is suggesting, ie it turns off any hardware acceleration and forces the CPU to do all the work.

@johnebaker

Hello again,

I changed my Program Settings> Display Options> Preview and playback on analog recording> Video mode to Standard Renderer

At first, i thought this solved my issue. The program did not force close. I tried closing the program myself and reopening several times, allowing the program to run for 10 minutes or more each time, to ensure it wasnt just a lucky attempt; it continued to work as intended for extended periods of time each attempt.

Unfortunately, the problem came back. I changed nothing in the program settings but the same issue returned.

Since then, I have changed Program Settings> Display Options> Preview in arranger> Video mode to Compatibility mode (VideoForWindows) but I am still getting the random crashes.

@CubeAce

The program crashes with an empty project, with an existing project, and even if i havent made a selection on whether to load a project or create a new one. If i open the program and do literally nothing, it will still crash in approx 5 minutes.

I also want to note- the program functions completely fine aside from the random crashing. I do not experience slow down of any kind, the program never stops responding, I do not experience issues adding media to the timeline, I do not experience issues exporting (aside from the fact that the program typically crashes before the export is complete), I do not experience issues previewing media in the timeline.

This is part of the reason why I am skeptical about it being graphics driver related. Granted, I basically know nothing about GPU functionality- but i would assume if it were an issue with my GPU, I would see the program misbehaving during general use. and i imagine that i would not get lucky from time to time and have the program remain open and functional indefinitely.

I don't mean for this to come off the wrong way. I am still open minded to the idea that it could be GPU driver related due to the software being outdated. I just wanted to share these additional details and my thoughts regarding them.

Anyway... I'll look into what you suggested about antivirus and let you know what I find.

Thanks again for your help!!
