Want to drag a track -- very basic concept. Why is something so fundamental buried (or not even available)?

Trying to move beyond Pinnacle.  have an old version of MEP (14) and glad to be able to lay multiple tracks on top of one another.  HOWEVER, the simple act of dragging one track eludes me.  Some websites say "click + drag!" but this doesn't actually drag the track; it changes the relative start position of the track while the track lies motionless where I laid it to begin with.

It's intuitive stuff like this that makes other programs more popular than yours.

keglined,

I suspect your problem is due to where you clicked. To move an object you need to click within it and then drag --the cursor is a little hand. If  you hover over the ends of objects the cursor can become a double headed arrow and you get the action you observed.

There is also a 'stretch' mouse mode available from the icons above the timelines. Here the cursor (when hovering over an end) becomes a little bit of film icon which lets you change the playing length of an object without cutting anything off.

Search for 'mouse mode' under 'Help' for more information on these and other modes.

Added: john-auvil has marked the mouse mode icons I've described. And I very much second his suggestion of trying out MEP17; go for the 'PLUS' version!

Regards,

Carl

Drag and track?

I can drag a track in Movie Edit Pro... but what are you trying to accomplish by doing this?

Are you wanting to move the video in the track to a new location?

Are you wanting to duplicate the track by extending it?

Are you wanting to manipulate the time of the track (speed it up, slow it down)?

Movie Edit Pro uses a cleaver concept of "Mouse Mode" and each mode gives you a different control functionality with the mouse and the object. This means you need to understand the object and object handles.

Basically an object is a workspace box that contains the media... video, photo, audio, text. Each object has handles, and the handles perform various functions depending on the media (fades, brightness/volume, and duration). The mouse modes offer different functions in how they work with the object and the object handles.

So, I am not sure what "intuitive" function you think is missing... but I am not sure what result you are trying to achieve. I think you just want to move the tracks around, that means you need to be in Universal Mouse Mode... if I remember right, they change the name to "All Tracks" in version 17, which is the latest version.

By being in the "Universal" mouse mode (I apologize for no screen shots, I do not have version 14 installed on this PC so I grabbed an image off the net) then left clicking and holding on the object you want to move then move it left right or down and around.

I marked off the area I remember as where you find the "Universal" mouse mode.

I think this should help, and btw... this is more a user-to-user area. I also find this is the best editor on the market, hands down. Its very intuitive, very robust, and very affordable. I am doing things with Movie Edit Pro 17 that I cannot do in Adobe Premiere, which is a shame when you compare prices.

But, the best software is the one you know how to use, so feel free to ask if you stumble in Movie Edit Pro, but I would recommend you download the trial of the latest version, what you have is no longer current.

Update:

First, the setup -- the track that wouldn't drag was #4.  1, 3 and 4 are video.  2 is audio.  3 and 4 w/transparent backgrounds, but couldn't move #4.

I put the same video into track 5, which worked.  The click + drag function worked in track 5, as advertised.  So track 4 in my project contains nothing -- empty track, and that doesn't seem to affect anything.

As far as I can tell, nothing about track 4 is locked, nor is it tied/linked to anything else.  Yet whatever I drop in it will not drag.  The others tracks I've tried so far work fine.

Very odd indeed! I've still got MEP14+ on one of my machines (use it for the 'Scan Audio' feature) and track 4 has no problems. If it were locked the little padlock icon at the far left would clearly show it -- open gray  / closed red.
