What is the difference between Magix Vegas Pro and Magix Video Editing

What is the difference between Magix Vegas Pro and Magix Video Editing? I have Magix Vegas Pro 19. Today I got an email from Magix offering a program called Magix Video Editing....which has a lower price point. What's the difference? Does Video Editing have something that Vegas Pro does not?

@Robert-Lyons-48 I don't know about about "Magix Video Editing" but Magix basically sells two different video editing softwares: Vegas and Video Deluxe.

Vegas was originally developed by Sonic Foundry and later sold by Sony. Sony ended funding for the development of Vegas and Magix bought Vegas from them because Vegas has a pretty large international user base.

Video Deluxe, on the other hand, is Magix' own video editing software they started developing around the year 2000. They later introduced a version with more professional features called Video Pro X. Video Deluxe has a pretty large user base in German speaking countries in central Europe. That's why they didn't stop selling it after acquiring Vegas.

If you already have one you technically don't need the other software.

Apart from the differences that @SP. has mentioned, the programs are tiered according to price so the higher the price the more functions that program tends to have. Also projects made in Vegas software are not really transferable across to Magix Movie Studio or Video Pro X.

The timelines and workflows are also very different.

What has changed a lot in all the programs is the introduction of AI which has added additional features but the computer specs needed to implement them smoothly into the workflow had also gone up somewhat and personally I would think twice before considering any upgrade and read the recommended specifications carefully to see if any functions could be hindered by your current computer.

There are differences between the software as pointed out in the above posts.

While all editing software can cut video, some can not load different file/codec formats. Also, if plugins are your thing, such as using VST for audio and other more advanced plugins like Boris FX, there is a difference between the software "brands" within the Magix company.

Go to the prospective websites for Magix and Vegas and see what they offer. Download the trial versions and see if they fit your needs for editing. Vegas Pro can be overkill for some people, while Magix might not be enough for others. I have both.

Hi

One major difference between the two products is the timeline.

Vegas uses a 'bottom up' order for overlaying images/video when creating Picture in Picture and overlay effects.

Video Pro X uses a 'top down' approach, ie track 1 is the background for images/video and overlays use lower tracks. This can cause initial confusion for someone coming from a bottom up track layout.

Example of a custom animated collage layout in VPX

A section of the track layout:

There is a list of tutorials for VPX here which may help if you decide to move across to VPX

There's no need to do this as your Magix account should under 'My products" show all your products, both Magix and Vegas. At least mine does and I've just checked.

Reyfox wrote on 2/21/2026, 5:32 PM

Correct. The Magix login will have everything including Vegas Pro and VPX/MMS/VDL/MEP along with other software one has purchased from Magix.

Hi

Looking at your image, there is no My products section.

This would suggest that the account you have logged in with, is not the one that the sofware is registered to.

@ericlnz, @Reyfox

Hi Eric, Tony

. . . . There's no need to do this as your Magix account  . . . .

That is true, and also vice versa in that I see my Magix software when logging in from the Vegas website, however we do need to get Vegas users to go to the correct forum, and website, and work from there.

We do appear to have a surge in the number of Vegas users posting in this forum recently.

I log into my account from the main Magix site which is independent of the forum sites.

Yes, that is how I log into my Magix account. I do not do it from within either Vegas or Magix user forums. Logging in from the forum requires two logins, one for the forum and one for Magix.

If you log into your Magix account, you will see all your Magix products. You have to use the same email/password that you used when in initially registered any Magix product.

I have a combination of various Magix products and Vegas Pro going back to 2015. I can not see any way that you would lose all your registered products to your user email/password address that you used to register your purchased/trial products.
