When I import a clip sometimes I'm offerd a choice to convert the file into a different format so that it will run on my system. Other clips wont allow it and I'm told that I need to activate a L code as it's on my external drive. Other times it just imports without giving me the option. Then I'm stuck with trying to edit an MPEG 4 file which really slows my computer up. I think it converts it into a MPG file.

Couldbeclearer,

It's not all MEP's fault -- it's also 'industry standards'. And you know what they say about industry standards, 'There are SO many to choose from.'!

Some of the complications come from certain file types, notably .AVIs, that are 'containers' -- they can hold a viariety of audios and videos requiring different codecs to hear and view. You can check some of a file's properties from within MEP, but to really know that you're working with you should get a free program like 'GSpot'.

You don't say from where you are importing (camera, web downloads?) nor your MEP program version so I can't offer specific answers but suggest the following:

Work through each of your import file types making careful note of what works and what doesn't. First put a sample of each into a new folder as MEP creates some extra files when you import, and their presence may mean you do / do not get certain import options like conversions. Then consider doing a conversion on those that MEP doesn't like

I've kept clear of the conversions MPE offers on import as they seemed to be of far lesser quality than the originals. If something needs conversion (like AVCHD video in older MEP versions) I use 'Super(c)', another free progam recommended by many MEP users.

I can't thnk of any reason the location of a file (internal or external drive) should make any difference other than speed if you have a slow USB 1 connection.

Your might also search through the topics on the other Magix forum for hints and tips from other users:

Hope this helps some,
