Why does my .avi file go silent

I am using movie edit pro 12 and In the edit interface, my avi file will have sound for a short second before going silent for the rest of the video. Why is that and how do I fix it?

Would those AVI files be little Motion JPEG clips from a Canon photo camera by any chance? I think you might have exactly the same problem described here:
