Corrupted Videos

Matthew-Coates escrito el 05.03.AM a las 00:49 horas

Magix Video Pro X version 17.0.3.68 (UDP3). I'm using a MS Surface Pro 6 on Windows 10 Pro.

I'm getting increasingly stressed with what appears to be some sort of file corruption. I download video content from Envato Elements. Often it comes in .mov format, but also sometimes in .mp4. I download the files and bring them into my movie and they display absolutely fine. I can edit away on my video for a while and all is fine. Playback is fine. The videos display just fine. But then for no reason at all I can playback another time and it's like one of the videos is 'empty'. I just get a black screen when it plays back that section of the video. So if I delete it and try to drop it in again from the source file, I get a message to say Magix can't play the file. There'll be some error or other, or the file isnt' compatible, or it's too short for display or something; and then all of sudden I can't open that file in VC player, Quick Time or Windows Film & TV. But 10 minutes ago it was absolutely fine. Now it's not. It's like MAgix is corrupting the file or something. I've done the latest update. I've even tried this in Video Pro X instead of Movie Pro Premium and I get the same result. It's immensely frustrating. All I'm trying to do is a 3 minute video for a school class lesson and it's driving me insane. I downloaded the mpeg4 codec in file in case that was the problem but I'm still getting it. Has anyone else come across this, or is it just my bad luck?

Hi Mathew, and welcome to the user to user forum.

First I confess I had never heard of Envato Elements so I had a look at the website.

The first thing I noticed is for whatever reason Video Pro X and Movie Edit Pro were not in the supported editor list. At present I have no idea why and do not have the time to look up why as I'm off to work now but will look into it when I get home unless someone else looks into it before I can and see if one of those listed could be a comparable editor to allow MEP or VPX to also use the files there.

Thanks Ray. I must admit, I didn't even realise that I'd need to check a supported editor list. Didn't even know such a thing existed on stock photo/video sites. Thanks for the heads up. Crumbs, does this mean I need to change my stock photo/video subscription to something better? I went to Envato because it seemed to be well recommended, and I must admit I've had good use out of it for photos, but only now experimenting with videos. So frustrating :(

Hi

. . . . I'm using a MS Surface Pro 6 on Windows 10 Pro . . . .

What is the system specification of the Surface pro - see this topic for details required.

. . . .  it comes in .mov format, but also sometimes in .mp4 . . . .

Some MOV file formats require Quicktime to be installed - MEP should give you a message that the file format is not supported.

Download and install MediaInfo and use this ti analyse one of the MOV and MP4 files that are showing the issue - post the results (copy & paste) from the Text view in Mediainfo.

@Matthew-Coates @johnebaker

Hi Matthew.

I've had more of a look around and it turns out what I saw was referring to some template packages and file types and not everything is editor specific. There are lots of of video files and some are only available at certain frame rates or resolutions. Some are using alpha channel for transparency and adding background images or video. I do not know whether MEP or VPX can handle those or not. While resolutions are also not normally a problem if your system can handle the larger ones and are put into smaller resolution projects without too much of a problem, mixing frame rates within a project is not always a good idea and could in theory cause a problem under certain editing conditions.

As John has suggested it might be a good idea to use MediaInfo to look at the data within some of the problem files you are using which may give us clues as to potential problems and to look at the spec of your surface Pro to make sure it can handle the files in question or the exports being produced. I noticed some of the video files have alpha channels

Ok, thanks guys. I have to say straight away, I'm a real novice at this and not sure much of what you've said makes sense; BUT I think I've managed to find my system info and post it into a signature (I hope). I also downloaded mediainfo. I wasn't really sure what I was doing with it. I dragged a fiel I'm having issues with into the window on mediainfo and then went to text view. Here's what it says;

Hi Mathew.

You have two lines missing from the top of the text view.

Can you add them please?

They should be.

General (with no additional information)

And Complete Name (that should show the original file name along with stored location and file type)

I ask because Windows has problems with different file headers and the line

Title                                    : Œ·‡·ÓÚ˜ËÍ ‚ˉÂÓ Apple / Œ·‡·ÓÚ˜ËÍ ÔÒ‚‰ÓÌËÏÓ‚ Apple

In your exif data worries me a bit if windows won't accept some of the characters in use of the title.

Ray.

Hi

From the MediaInfo data:

Format                                   : JPEG
Codec ID                                 : jpeg

This video encoded format requires Quicktime to be installed.

At worst it will import to give an object on the timeline with no video and or audio, at best it will not import at all and give an error message saying QuickTime is needed.

The odd title in the EXIF data should not give an issue - it looks like it is a different language code that cannot be interpreted correctly.

. . . . It's like MAgix is corrupting the file or something . . . .

This very unlikely - MEP is a non destructive video editor, what it will do however is lock the file so other programs cannot use it while MEP is running - this is normal.

@Matthew-Coates @johnebaker

Hi Mathew.

Thanks for the additional lines. I was worried that the line I pointed out was reflected in the files title. Windows does not allow the use of most non alpha / numerical keys to be used in file format titles.

John is more experienced than me at reading these data files so take it that is not the problem.

If you are worried about installing such an old version of QuickTime that has not been supported for some time, look up QuickTime Alternative and use that instead. Either will do.

As John said, all video editors should be non destructive and not alter the source files in any way.

I will try to remember John's advice on which version of a mov. file needs QuickTime for future reference.

Let us know if this does not cure your problem.

I do already have Quicktime installed, although it doesn't seem to load properly, so perhaps this is the issue. I've uninstalled and re-installed and still having the same issue. Now uninstalled again and going to try the Quicktime alternative. I'll let you know how I get on. Just wanted to say a massive thank you for your help so far.

Hi Mathew.

Can you play the mov. files in Films and TV? I ask because if you can, QuickTime may already be working on your system. If it says File not supported then it probably isn't.

Hi

Is the video clip a free one from Envato Elements? If so can you post a link to it then we can test it.

Hi

. . . .  it's a paid for subscription . . . .

Unfortunately uploading to the forum does not help with the issues - in uploading the video format has been re-encoded so is no longer the original format.

As this is a paid for clip sharing the original file will breach the licence terms of Envato or the original creator.

Hi Matthew.

I don't know about John but I'm now racking my brain for an explanation. I don't think either of us (John and me) can think of a reason the file is playing up. So I have to assume the file for the moment is fine. That you do have a working copy of QuickTime on your machine. The project is not a long one and the resolution of the file should not really be a problem.

That for now leaves the precise machine spec to be explored.

Can you find out the processor in use, Make, model number etc. Amount of onboard ram. Windows build number. Any driver numbers for any GPUs the system may possess.

These can be found in Settings \ System \ About, for the basic information. The GPU graphics drivers (If you have any) will be under Settings \ System \ Display \ Advanced display settings \ Display adaptor properties (there could be more than one but probably not) and then in the Adapter tab click on the Properties box and the driver version will be displayed in the Driver tab alongside the Driver version heading.

This will let us see if there may be a shortfall somewhere in the system. I'm not expecting to see any trouble but it's best to rule it out.

Ray.

Hi Ray

Matthew has already put the specs in his signature.

Technically there is no issue I can see with the video or the Surface Pro 6.

And yes I am puzzled by this.

Hi Ray

I have been looking at the Intel iGPU updates and most of them are for gamers, I cannot recollect seeing one which had any bearing on the UHD 620 encoder/decoder.

@Matthew-Coates

As a test, try converting the video to h.264 encoding using Handbrake and these settings for the video tab

Hi

A bit of googling brings up a DEC 2018 article that probably explains why the files don't play. There are several .mov types that use a JPEG codec - Photo JPEG and Motion JPEG B which he states Quicktime 7 will ("soon") be unable to play, and that these are often used in stock footage library files.

I presume that as QT7 was the last version that runs on Windows then our Magix PC's will likely have a problem with those codecs also.

Looks like conversion is the only answer, further - some (later) versions of QT player actually carry out an automatic conversion to H.264 before playing!

I did notice that QT7 was last updated in 2016. I also noticed that if I open it up it just hangs and says 'loading'. Not sure if that's part of the problem - as far as I can see though it is only supported on Windows Vista and Windows 7. It suggests it won't work properly on Windows 10. If that's the case though I'd have thought I'm not the first to experience this issue. Going to try the conversion using Handbrake as John suggests. I tried converting in VLC but it didn't actually seem to do anything.

@Matthew-Coates

I have QT7 running on my Win 10 machine, without problem, so it is not the case that it does not work under that OS.

However, as the article that Peter quoted shows, it does appear that it is specific "types" of MOV that may no longer be playable.
