VPXX .BAK files load as Video Pro X7, not VPX

RogerGunkel escrito el 10.12.PM a las 13:12 horas

I usually save my editing every few minutes, aware that Magix VPX also is set to autosave every 10 minutes. I forgot to save my project editing this morning after spending an hour with some complicated cuts and transitions. The programme unusually suddenly locked up completely and I had to use task manager to shut it down, then loaded the project again from the backup file. The problem is that the backup file, although saved only 3 minutes from the lockup, was loaded as a Video ProX7 project, not VPX(10)

I still keep Video Pro X7 on the PC in case I have problems with VPX(10), but don't use it as it has problems with some of my 4K footage. For some reason, VPX seems to autosave as a Video Pro X7 back up file and will not load it back into VPX(10) no matter what I do. This means that I have lost all of my complex editing unless I use Video Pro X7 for the remainder, which will not enable me to work properly with my footage.

Has anybody else come across this or know a work around, or how to get VPX to autosave to a file that it can re open?

Roger

This is most likely due to what program is associated with the file extensions.

Click on windows button and start typing "File extensions" until you get a suggested program like "Change the file type associated with a file extension"(win7) / "Choose a default app for each type of file" (Win10) and click on this. You should now open a part of control panel/Settings "Control Panel\Programs\Default Programs\Set Associations" (Win7) / "Settings" (Win 10) where you can change the associated program for a specific file type. Change the program exe file from the VPX 7 to VPX 10 (you should see the difference from the path).

NB! Checking currently on a Win 7, machine, Win 10 is somewhat different.

Thanks for the reply, and following your instructions found the place to change the default app. Unfortunately there is no way to select VPX from there. The only options are Video Pro7 or the app store.

I've also tried to go to the .bak files and right clip to access the properties, then click on change application. That allows me to select search, where I can locate the VPX 10 file, but selecting it reverts straight back to VPX7. I'm wondering whether that has stayed the Magix core default for VPX10 and can't be changed.

@RogerGunkel

Open VPX, Close opening dialog (New/open Project).

From menu: File>Load Backup Project... (or use Ctrl+Shift+O)

Then you will be provided with a dialog listing Your auto-backup files, and the option to search for backup files.

I notice that my files are actually *.MV_ however With a *.BAKx.MV_ (x=0..9) so if you have default settings for File Explorer only the *.BAKx will show.

EDIT:

An alternative option is to make a copy of the *.BAK file and rename it to *.MVP.

My explorer settings are set to show hidden files and extensions in Win10, but although they seem to be showing with the MV extension, the icon attached to it is VPX7, not the purple VPX10 one. The default app for MV files is also showing as VPX7 with no facility to change it.

I did though take your advice and change one of the BAK files to an MVP, which VPX10 now sees as a normal project and loads it successfully, so thanks for that. I had already gone back to the much earlier project file that had been saved and re edited the bits that had not been saved. Now I know that I can change a backup file to a project file, I won't have that problem again in the event of another crash. It doesn't explain why all the VPX10 backup files are being saved for VPX7 though, or why I can't prevent that happening. You can clearly see from the attached screen grab and the rename that I changed 'Emma & Matt 02.MVP'

Hi John,

Thanks for the reply, but I think you have missed the point of my original post. I know that I can load backup files either directly from my project folder as in the previous attachment pic, or can start VPX10 from scratch and use the File, load Backup Project. The problem is that whichever way I try to load a backup, they always load as VPX7. Even if I load VPX10 first, the backup file changes the programme to VPX7.

As you can see from my previous pic, all the backup files are shown with the VPX7 icon. The only option seems to be the one that shgrude suggested, which is to change the backup file extension to MVP. I can't understand why the backup files are being saved automatically to a VPX7 file, or how to stop that.

Hi Roger,

I'm a bit lost. The backups are all MV_ and they show up under Windows Apps thing as MV_ File, as per your last image, and there is no program to open these. This is normal. You open them from within the program. What I understand that you are saying is that even if you load the backup file from within VPX10, it somehow unloads VPX10 and loads VPX7? Is that it?

I just loaded a VPX10 backup with VPX10 and I'm still in VPX 10.

That is completely correct John. Could you take a screen shot of your project folder with the backup files in it, as the one that I posted shows all the files there, but with the VPX7 icon, whereas I would expect there to be a purple VPX10 icon.

There must be some connection with the fact that I still have VPX7 installed on the same PC, but that shouldn't affect how VPX10 stores it's backup files. I'm completely puzzled 😕

Hi Roger,

I'm on my way to the dentist so cannot post a screen shot, but there were no icons beside these MV_ files as they are not linked to any program and no way to do so.

I still have VPX 7 installed.

Hi

I get no change in the associated icon for VPX4 (this is the only earlier version I have installed) vs VPX 10 (and MEP) when setting the default program to open MVP's with - as you can see below

The file opens with the correct version of VPX when setting the default through the Change option in the images above.

All the backup files have no program associated with them ie they have a blank icon as shown below.

Hi John EB,

This is becoming curioser and curioser as Alice would say!

I can see that you have no icon alongside your BAK files, whereas on mine you can clearly see the VPX7 icon. When I use the CHANGE option, there is no option to change to VPX10, only VPX7 or the app store.

You can also see from my previous grab of the change default application screen, that .bak has a VPX7 icon as does .mv which was further down off the screen. There is no option to change it.

@RogerGunkel

@johnebaker shows a different method of changing the file assosiation to the one I explained.
If you right-click on a file, then choose properties, you will get the dialog seen in his screenshots. From there you can change the program assosiation, and that way you are allowed to search for programs on your PC, so you should be able to choose VPX 10. As expalined by me and @browj2, it should not be needed to assosiate the *.mv_ files (they are *.mv_ not *.mv) when using the CTRL+SHIFT+O Backup File loading.

Glad you at least have a work-around using file rename.

I don't wish to sound pedantic as I appreciate your input, but having been editing on computers for my living for decades, I am well aware of the various ways of changing file associations. What I am saying is that I have tried every way I can think of to change the backup file association and although what you suggest is what I have already been doing, it does not work.

Unfortunately I have absolutely no time available to make a video of the problem to put on here, but will when I get time. I have five weddings to edit before Christmas and am editing 14 hours per day at the moment, so just hope I have no further problems or you will be able to read my obituary😨
