Cannot start VPX17 by double-clicking on MVP file

Video Pro X17, 23.0.1.269 on Windows 11 24H2 OS Build 26100.6584

The file extension, .mvp, is registered to VPX17 in Windows. If I go to a project file, .mvp, using Windows Explorer and double-click on it, it should open in VPX17; it should load VPX17 and the project. For me, the cursor turns for a few seconds, then nothing; VPX17 doesn't open. This worked previously in Windows 10 with VPX16.

If I change the linked app for .mvp to Movie Studio 2024, double-clicking on the same or any other file opens it in MS2024.

I noticed this because I have created a database of projects and multimedia. The mvp file is stored as a hyperlink in the table. I have a button that simply opens the hyperlink, that is, opens the mvp file using whatever App the extension is linked to in Windows. This had always worked until VPX17 and/or W11. No longer.

Strangely, if I open another instance of Windows Explorer, which opens to the Recent screen, and an mvp or mvd file is listed, double-clicking on it opens it in VPX17. However, if I then navigate or go to the actual file location and double-click on it, nothing happens.

Another strange thing, in Windows Settings, for the extension .mvp, change the App, Movie Studio 2025 Suite doesn't show up on the suggested list. If I navigate to the Program location in Settings and select the exe file, videodeluxe.exe, it doesn't register. That is, the App linked to mvp doesn't change.

Could those of you who have VPX17 on W11 try double-clicking on an mvp file in Windows Explorer to see if VPX17 opens and with the mvp project?

Thanks,

Hi John,

I've just tested this on my Win 11 (same build as you) with same build of VPX17 and the first thing I see is a screen asking me which app (VPX17 or VdL 2026) I want to use to open it, and whether "Always" or "Just once".

Clicking on VPX17 and it opens without further problem!

(I can't take a screenshot of that screen offering the app choices because as soon as I click to take the shot it disappears from my screen but I'm pretty sure you will know the one I mean!)

So, it seems the fact that you do not see that "options" screen is what might be causing the problem for you. I wonder how/if you can restore it?

Hi Jeff,

Thanks for taking a look. I don't get the choice about opening the file - "Always" or "Just once" - for MVP files. That is, I don't see this when right-clicking on the file, "Open with." With some other files, I get the choice, some others, I don't. I have no idea how Windows determines this.

Here is what I see when right-clicking an MVP file and selecting "Open with..."

Neither should be just MAGIX Video deluxe Plus. The version 2024 and 2025 should at least show.

Selecting VPX also works here. What doesn't work is the double-click on the mvp file when VPX is the default program for mvp.

To get the hyperlink to work in MS Access, I had to create a shortcut to VPX, then a batch file, then open the batch file plus the selected mvp file with an event trigger. Like I said, just running the hyperlink used to work.

I was on W10 and used MS to install W11 over it, so not a new install.

Still, other programs work fine, just not VPX.

I went through a series of test with CoPilot, to no avail. It proposed the batch file on a shortcut, as that seemed to be the only solution.

Hi John,

This is very bizarre! I've just tried the double-click on an .MVP file (which worked this morning) and now get exactly what you were seeing, i.e., nothing happens, not even the screen I saw before which asked me to select an app!

It seems that "Open with..." is the only route that works! And my install of Win 11 was "new", no prior installation of Win 10 since this was a new computer at the end of 2024.

@johnebaker any ideas???

Jeff

Hi,

Just to add one more strange thing and I'm wondering if this is caused by W11. if I put an audio file, .mxcogg, purchased from Magix Store, that shows up under the Audio tab, on the timeline, save, close the program (VPX), then reopen the program and the project, then the opening part hangs because it can't find the file. Actually, it won't load because the Magix store-purchased stuff doesn't show up under Audio. If you start the program, start a new project, click on the Audio tab and wait, the stuff will show up. If you then open the project that has the mxcogg file, it will now load properly. However, if you open the program, then a project that has an mxcogg file before anything else, the program trying to find the mxcogg file will block the program from logging in and populating the Audio tab. You have to close the project without saving (start a new project), wait till Audio gets populated, then reopen the project and it will work.

Anyone else seeing this problem?

Note that it used to work if I waited a bit until the program logged in, and then clicked on Repeat and the file would load. No longer.
