Cannot start VPX17 by double-clicking on MVP file

browj2 wrote on 10/6/2025, 10:21 AM

Video Pro X17, 23.0.1.269 on Windows 11 24H2 OS Build 26100.6584

The file extension, .mvp, is registered to VPX17 in Windows. If I go to a project file, .mvp, using Windows Explorer and double-click on it, it should open in VPX17; it should load VPX17 and the project. For me, the cursor turns for a few seconds, then nothing; VPX17 doesn't open. This worked previously in Windows 10 with VPX16.

If I change the linked app for .mvp to Movie Studio 2024, double-clicking on the same or any other file opens it in MS2024.

I noticed this because I have created a database of projects and multimedia. The mvp file is stored as a hyperlink in the table. I have a button that simply opens the hyperlink, that is, opens the mvp file using whatever App the extension is linked to in Windows. This had always worked until VPX17 and/or W11. No longer.

Strangely, if I open another instance of Windows Explorer, which opens to the Recent screen, and an mvp or mvd file is listed, double-clicking on it opens it in VPX17. However, if I then navigate or go to the actual file location and double-click on it, nothing happens.

Another strange thing, in Windows Settings, for the extension .mvp, change the App, Movie Studio 2025 Suite doesn't show up on the suggested list. If I navigate to the Program location in Settings and select the exe file, videodeluxe.exe, it doesn't register. That is, the App linked to mvp doesn't change.

Could those of you who have VPX17 on W11 try double-clicking on an mvp file in Windows Explorer to see if VPX17 opens and with the mvp project?

Thanks,

John CB

Hi John,

I've just tested this on my Win 11 (same build as you) with same build of VPX17 and the first thing I see is a screen asking me which app (VPX17 or VdL 2026) I want to use to open it, and whether "Always" or "Just once".

Clicking on VPX17 and it opens without further problem!

(I can't take a screenshot of that screen offering the app choices because as soon as I click to take the shot it disappears from my screen but I'm pretty sure you will know the one I mean!)

So, it seems the fact that you do not see that "options" screen is what might be causing the problem for you. I wonder how/if you can restore it?

Hi Jeff,

Thanks for taking a look. I don't get the choice about opening the file - "Always" or "Just once" - for MVP files. That is, I don't see this when right-clicking on the file, "Open with." With some other files, I get the choice, some others, I don't. I have no idea how Windows determines this.

Here is what I see when right-clicking an MVP file and selecting "Open with..."

Neither should be just MAGIX Video deluxe Plus. The version 2024 and 2025 should at least show.

Selecting VPX also works here. What doesn't work is the double-click on the mvp file when VPX is the default program for mvp.

To get the hyperlink to work in MS Access, I had to create a shortcut to VPX, then a batch file, then open the batch file plus the selected mvp file with an event trigger. Like I said, just running the hyperlink used to work.

I was on W10 and used MS to install W11 over it, so not a new install.

Still, other programs work fine, just not VPX.

I went through a series of test with CoPilot, to no avail. It proposed the batch file on a shortcut, as that seemed to be the only solution.

Hi John,

This is very bizarre! I've just tried the double-click on an .MVP file (which worked this morning) and now get exactly what you were seeing, i.e., nothing happens, not even the screen I saw before which asked me to select an app!

It seems that "Open with..." is the only route that works! And my install of Win 11 was "new", no prior installation of Win 10 since this was a new computer at the end of 2024.

@johnebaker any ideas???

Hi,

Just to add one more strange thing and I'm wondering if this is caused by W11. if I put an audio file, .mxcogg, purchased from Magix Store, that shows up under the Audio tab, on the timeline, save, close the program (VPX), then reopen the program and the project, then the opening part hangs because it can't find the file. Actually, it won't load because the Magix store-purchased stuff doesn't show up under Audio. If you start the program, start a new project, click on the Audio tab and wait, the stuff will show up. If you then open the project that has the mxcogg file, it will now load properly. However, if you open the program, then a project that has an mxcogg file before anything else, the program trying to find the mxcogg file will block the program from logging in and populating the Audio tab. You have to close the project without saving (start a new project), wait till Audio gets populated, then reopen the project and it will work.

Anyone else seeing this problem?

Note that it used to work if I waited a bit until the program logged in, and then clicked on Repeat and the file would load. No longer.

With respect to the OGG audio, I cannot replicate this.

Hi John,

.....I can't start VPX17 by double-clicking a hyperlink/shortcut MVP file...

This sounds very familiar. If a hyperlink/shortcut has been created, the MVP project file is always opened with the Magix program assigned to the hyperlink/shortcut. To change the launch of a hyperlink/shortcut, you don't need to change the launch via the hyperlink/shortcut, but always the launch of the original MVP project file. Try the following:

  • Right-click the MVP hyperlink/shortcut
  • Click Open File Location
  • Right-click the original MVP file
  • Click Open With > Choose Another App
  • Select the Magix program you want to open it with
  • Click Always
  • Now, when you double-click the hyperlink/shortcut, the MVP project file will be launched with the selected Magix program

Hi John,

An addition to my previous answer. If the program you want isn't listed in the menu, scroll all the way down and click "Choose an app on your computer."

Go to C:\Program Files\MAGIX\Video Pro X17 and click on video_pro_x.exe; this startup link will now be added.

Hi Rob,

Thanks for taking a look. However, I did all of that. Switching to MS2025, using right-click on the mvp files, choose another app, select Magix Video deluxe Plus, Always, opens the program in Movie Studio. Exit Movie Studio. Now double-click on the MVP file, it opens in MS2025. No problem.

If I then do a right-click, Open with, Choose another app, select VPX17, click on Always, VPX17 opens with the file - the first time. Close VPX17. Go back to the mvp file in Windows Explorer, not the recent tab, double-click on the mvp file, the cursor spins a bit, then nothing - VPX17 doesn't load. I have tried this many times, restarted the computer. No luck.

Hi John,

I can't reproduce your first problem: "I cannot start VPX17 by double-clicking on the MVP file." I'll try to make a video.

Your second problem: "If I put an audio file, .mxcogg, purchased from the Magix Store, that shows up under the Audio tab, on the timeline, save it, close the program (VPX), then reopen the program and the project, the opening part hangs because it can't find the file."

I was able to reproduce this problem in both Windows 10 and Windows 11. Unfortunately, I haven't found a solution.

@emmrecs @johnebaker @Bol

Hi,

I reviewed the links from @Marc-Goder. Thank you for those.

I see that this is all a registry problem and a bug with Magix.

I have now installed Video Deluxe 2026+ and the same problem persists. The default for MVP and MVD was changed to VDL2026. It opened the first time when double-clicking on the MVP file in Windows Explorer, but not the second or subsequent times.

Rob, I followed your video precisely, changed to VPX to open always, and it opens the first time. Closing VPX17 and double-clicking in Windows Explorer the second time does nothing. Exactly the same thing happened with VDL2026.

This seems to work for some users, but judging from what I saw on the German forum, it mostly does not work.

As indicated by Marc, the solutions given by @kPeiffer here, seem to work, but I haven't yet tried any of them.

For VPX17, here is what the changes to the registry are as per the proposed reg file:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MAGIX.Video_Pro_X17\Shell\APPlayDVDMovie]
"NoWorkingDirectory"=""

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MAGIX.Video_Pro_X17\Shell\APPlayVideoFiles]
"NoWorkingDirectory"=""

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MAGIX.Video_Pro_X17\Shell\APShowPictures]
"NoWorkingDirectory"=""

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MAGIX.Video_Pro_X17.dip\shell\open]
"NoWorkingDirectory"=""

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MAGIX.Video_Pro_X17.mvd\shell\open]
"NoWorkingDirectory"=""

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MAGIX.Video_Pro_X17.mvp\shell\open]
"NoWorkingDirectory"=""

I'm about to try this now.

What I find really annoying is that this has been reported to Magix and they've done nothing about it. I wonder if there are any developers and programmers for VPX and VDL left at Magix.

Edit: I just ran the fix for VPX17 and I'm happy to report that it works.

Hi,

Further to my previous, whilst double-clicking on an MVP file now works from Windows Explorer, trying to open VPX17 with the MVP file from my database does not work.

For those interested, here is the VBA used to open programs from a button in the Access database.

Private Sub btnLaunchProject_Click()
    Dim exePath As String
    Dim projectPath As String

    exePath = Nz(Me.txtProgramExe, "")
    projectPath = Nz(Me.Project_File, "")

    If exePath = "" Or projectPath = "" Then
        MsgBox "Missing executable or project file path.", vbExclamation
        Exit Sub
    End If

    ' If Program_exe is a batch file, launch it directly
    If Right(exePath, 4) = ".bat" Then
        shell "explorer.exe """ & exePath & """", vbNormalFocus
    Else
        ' Launch the executable with the project file as argument
        shell """" & exePath & """ """ & projectPath & """", vbNormalFocus
    End If
End Sub

The field txtProgramExe contains the path.exe for VPX17:

C:\Program Files\MAGIX\Video Pro X17\video_pro_x.exe

I tested this from the Windows Run command and it opens VPX17.

The field Project_File contains the path\filename.mvp as in:

B:\Documents\MAGIX\Video Pro X\Projects\Business and Travel\Angola.MVP

If I change that to MMS2025:

C:\Program Files\MAGIX\Movie Studio 2025 Suite\videodeluxe.exe

no problem. MMS2025 opens with project.

In the above code, the part to open a bat file was a workaround given to me by Copilot. A batch file works but the method is still a work in progress; the script needs to change the MVP filename in the batch file, not there yet.

So, there is still a problem somewhere with VPX and VDL. Most annoying!

Here is what the detail page of the database looks like:

Normally, the program exe box is hidden.

As indicated by Marc, the solutions given by @kPeiffer here, seem to work, but I haven't yet tried any of them.

For VPX17, here is what the changes to the registry are as per the proposed reg file:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MAGIX.Video_Pro_X17\Shell\APPlayDVDMovie]
"NoWorkingDirectory"=""

............

@emmrecs, @johnebaker, @Bol
Hi All,

just to make it very clear: it's kind of "dangerous" for the "average" user to manually edit the Windows-Registry. That's why I created these downloadable ".reg-files" with which you can safely "heal" the MAGIX problem by just downloading the file matching with your installed product and "Double-Clicking" these files.
So that No-One needs to search this forum for the links I post them again in this place:

Good luck... 😊

Hi John

Did you try using a Macro with the RunApplication action instead of VBA and Shell.

IMHO a much easier route.

@browj2,

I don't know if this is helpful for your database: to open Projects with VDX17 (or VDL2026) from a command-line these would be the appropriate commands:

cmd /c start /min powershell -command "& C: ; & 'C:\Program Files\MAGIX\Video Pro X17\video_pro_x.exe' '%1'"
cmd /c start /min powershell -command "& C: ; & 'C:\Program Files\MAGIX\Video deluxe 2026 Plus\videodeluxe.exe' '%1'"

with %1 be replaced by the path to your MVP or MVD file.

@kPeiffer @johnebaker

Hi,

Thanks for your help.

John EB, there is no RunApplication for macros in Access.

@kPeiffer, your cmd code works fine outside of Access, but running it from within Access is done using shell and doesn't work.

The workaround is to create a shortcut to VPX on the desktop (VPX.lnk), then dynamically create a batch file that uses the shortcut and adds in the .mvp filename. There is more to it than that, but it seems to work.

Hyperlinking to an mvp file from Word or Excel should also work, but they don't for VPX17 and VDL2026. You can try this out to see. Other programs and older Magix programs work.

The normal code - shell """" & exePath & """ """ & projectPath & """", vbNormalFocus - works fine for all other programs. So, now I have code that checks to see if VPX17 is the program, if so, go the batch file route, if not, use the shell command.

I don't like doing this as these specific things get hidden in the code and should not be. In other words, this is poor database design caused by Magix bugs.

Magix needs to fix these launching problems for VPX17 and VDL2026. I will also raise a ticket with Magix, but I am pessimistic about Magix doing anything anymore.

Thanks,

John CB

Hi John

OT, however, It is has been in all versions since 2007.

Click the Show all Actions when in the macro wizard

The above is from 365, latest version, which I have to sort out the trust and security settings and being able to work offline.

@johnebaker @kPeiffer

Hi John EB,

Thanks for that. I didn't think to open the Show All list. I managed to get it working and have replaced the code in my database with dynamic code that opens VPX17 or VDL2026, depending on the selection in the database, along with the selected mvp file. Great!

@kPeiffer Thank you also for your help. Your code was instrumental in making the macro work.

Here is the result:

I still think that there is a problem with Magix' delivery of VPX17 and VDL2026 as the normal shell code works for the previous versions and all other programs that I use in my database.

Thanks,

John CB
