Effects Overlay Lost

I added effects to still pictures and video, with both sound and picture. They were working fine, I did more editing to other parts of the movie and now the video effects do not overlay the picture or video, you can still hear the audio portion of the effect and see that the effect is still there, but it does not overlay the picture or video. I tried deleting the picture and doing it again, but the same thing happens. It is like I turned it off somehow...any ideas would be helpful. Thanks

Is there a way you can go over this step-by-step, so that I can try it?

This would mean knowing the file types you have used, as-well-as the effects and overlays you have used.

If you delete that effect and add it in again, does it show up?
