Excessive ram usage

Viperveteran wrote on 9/15/2020, 5:20 PM

Hi I am a new user of video pro x. I have this weird problem where the program will just consume all my memory even when I open it and leave it without touching it. When I open it, it just keeps using up all my ram gradually until the program freezes. It happens even quicker when I actually load a project. I suspect it might be a memory leak but I have no clue what to do. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Hi.

I think VPX should top out using an extra 3GB when just opened but may increase if it hasn't finished loading all the additional content yet.

How many projects have you created? Are the projects residing on your C: drive?

Projects can be loaded into ram for use by VPX. I have projects that load over 20GB of ram and they are not that big. Under fifteen minutes. Normally this is when it's loading settings for various effects.

VPX needs a lot of empty C: drive space to work. If it hasn't, it could be loading stuff to ram instead.

This is only a guess at this point but do you have a lot of spare capacity on the C: drive?

Ray.

Hi @CubeAce,

Thanks for the response. Well I only have one project at the moment and it is on my D: drive which has around 62gb free out of 500gb and my c drive has 44gb free out of 240gb. My pagefile is on the D drive I have tried turning it on for the C drive but it made no difference whatsoever.

The weirdest thing is if I only open VPX and not touch anything else the ram consumption just keeps on going up until it maxes out and freezes.

Hi.

Did any of your projects crash before this happened?

Have you ever forced a shutdown of a project before this happened?

If so it may be worth going to the project folders and deleting any HO and HDP files. That should remove any entries that produce the list of projects you see on startup. See if that stops the memory creeping up. You can then try opening a project using an MPV file from the folder if you need to which should create new HO and HDP files.

I'm not sure but it could be a corrupt project causing this.

I'm sure if others here think I'm wrong they will chip in with new suggestions.

Ray.

@CubeAce @johnebaker

Thank you for your responses.

I tried removing the HO files that I had created but that did not fix the issue.

Support contacted me a short while and suggested that I reinstalled the visual c++ runtimes, I did that and also uninstalled and reinstalled my Video Pro x 11. When I restarted the ram usage stopped increasing after opening it and it seems that it is fixed. I am not sure which action resolved it, I probably should have reinstalled it first and then tried the visual c++ but I am happy that I can make some vids.

Thank you again for your help.

Hi

Thanks for letting us know the solution. The issue you were having is a very rare one - so rare that I cannot remember ever hearing this happen before.

@johnebaker

It was the first time a program ever did that to me. 😄
