OK, I know I'm late to the party but since I found what I think may be a solution to this I'll just leave it here for future users.
After reading this I was about to uninstall the font that was not working for me (IllusionJETM, which btw was a .ttf) and do a cleanup in the fontcache and registry (if maybe something got stuck there and a regular reinstall was not working), when I noticed the installation path. It was installed in:
%USERNAME%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Fonts
which got me thinking that it was not installed system wide and only for the current user. So I search some more about installing fonts system wide and found this:

After following that it installed to:
%WINDIR%\Fonts
and when I reopened Movie Edit my font displayed correctly all the time.
With this info on hand I think it's safe to say that Movie Edit needs a system wide installed font to work properly all the time. Hope this helps sort out this problem for everybody else.

I think there's more to it than that, maybe it's how you're are logged in on your PC because I just installed 8 BIT WONDER. I'm Admin on this PC.
It goes here Users\'me'\APPDATA .......... & works fine in MMS.
I have same problem with Magix Video Pro X16 and Video Deluxe 16 Plus.

When I click Check mark the font changes to Arial...
The font works correctly in other softwares like GIMP and LibreOffice.

Did you try setting the font and size before changing the default text ?
This font works fine in VPX 17, I cannot test with 16 it is not installed on my laptop.
I did have an issue with a different 'older' TTF font which showed the same behaviour as you are getting, the only solution was to convert it to an OpenType Font format.

Solution: I downloaded the same font from Dafont: https://www.dafont.com/yanone-kaffeesatz.font
and I installed OTF version. Now it's working.
