Help! My "program monitor" keeps freezing! (I've just upgraded to MEP 17+)

I've just bought a copy of Edit Pro 17+ having previously used Edit Pro 14 for the last couple of years. My first impression was that the interface seemed very familiar (especially when editing in 'timeline') so I shouldn't have too much trouble at least with the basics..... HOWEVER it turns out not to be that simple! I've just wasted over an hour trying to make the most basic thing work (playback of one of my old/previous projects after first letting it get read and automatically converted to the new format), as well as reading through the help and manual and all that stuff!

The problem is that when I click the play button on the "program monitor" it DOES start playing back the sound track, however the picture is frozen at the frame where the "playback marker" (red line with red triangle on top) is set.

If I drag the "playback marker" along either the "timeline" or in the "program monitor" I can see all the frames, however it doesn’t usually play automatically :(

Having said that it does occasionally play the way I'd expect, but only for a few seconds and I've no idea how or why :(

I have plenty of disk space (C: is 150Gb and D: is 2Tb and both are around 1/3 used and 2/3 free each).
I should have enough memory as there's 4Gb, with 3Gb "usable" apparently.

Does anyone know what am I doing wrong (probably something fairly simple and quite stupid)? Can anyone explain what I should do to solve this problem?

 

I'd really appreciate some help as it's driving me crazy!

1. update the software " help ", "online update ".
2. Download and install a more current driver graphic card driver.
3. Restore default settings of the software. "File" , "Settings".

Thanks Abba - much appreciated. That was an excellent suggestion and it seems to have made a big difference!

Interestingly it "1/2" worked after I ran the online update and then followed that by resetting the defaults (something I'd never have thought of doing if you hadn’t so kindly pointed it out). At this point the software was behaving very differently from before with the "program monitor" now jumping from scene to scene (instead of just being frozen at the first one), however it still wasn't running the movie content of each scene - just showing a static image of the first frame. I then tried resetting the defaults a second time and after that I'd say it's almost all working properly now!

There still seem to be a few minor glitches but it's certainly 95% better now, which is a great relief. I'm supposed to be at work now so shouldn't spend any more time studying it or playing until this evening.

Hi Abba,

 

My copy of the Edit Pro software is still unsatisfactory.... I’m now wishing I hadn’t spent time & money on the upgrade from MEP14 to MEP17!

 

I was grateful for the suggestion to use the online "upgrade" function to rebuild the program in..... it certainly improved it even though it hasn't solved all the problems. Incidentally, I was a little taken aback at what a major task the online "upgrade" function was - it seem to work almost as hard (and took as long) as the whole of the original installation of the new version from CD so who knows what it was actually doing?!

 

Some of the remaining problems;


(1) transitions while playing the “project” in the “program monitor” are not remotely smooth – they sometimes run smoothly for a second or two then flicker or jump.


(2) On trying to export as a Windows Media file (.wmv) I go an error message telling me about a parameter mismatch (which was fair enough) and offering me three option – “customize movie”, “continue” or “cancel”. I soon found the “customize movie” and “cancel” options were the same! Also, once I overcame (by ignoring) this problem, and carefully adjusted the output settings I found the size of resulting file enormous and image quality very poor. I certainly get much better optimised results by exporting from MEP17 as “uncompressed video” then running through Microsoft’s rather feeble “Windows Live Movie Maker” to convert to .wmv which is a surprising and very disappointing state of affairs.


(3) When I run try running a .wmv file generated by MEP17 the following slightly unexpected (and somewhat disconcerting) error message:

 

The color scheme has been changed

The following program has performed an action that required Windows
to temporarily change the color scheme to Windows 7 Basic.

Process identifier (PID): 4576


I only bought the program for fun & recreational use, but it now feels like B-testing and grappling with software so is no longer my idea of a leisure time activity!

 

Oh well.

 

Any other suggestions on what I could try next (other than de-installing it and throwing the disk away - even though it looks really nice and the packaging and everything is certainly very well made)?
