How to zoom in and stay zoommed for multiple clips then zoom out?

Say I have three video clips each 1 minute long that make up my movie.

On video clip 1 at the 30 second mark I want to zoom in. Then I want that zoom to be maintained across the rest of video clip 1 and video clip 2. Then at the 2:30 mark (30 seconds into video clip 3) I want to zoom back out.

When I apply my zoom at the 30 second mark on video clip one, it works great but as soon as it hits video clip two the effect is removed and it instantly goes to full view again.

BTW. I have MEP 17 Plus.

As the video clips are individual objects you have to apply zoom effects to each clip in turn as you need.

Is there a way to copy the ending rectangle size and position to apply to clip #2 and the first part of clip #3?

Hi Jeremy

Not as far as I can see - I have just tested it. The way I do it is to use the Effects, Size/Position dialog as follows:

1. At the point in the first clip where you want to start the zoom insert a keyframe,

2. Move the timeline cursor to the point in the same clip where you want the zoom to end and insert another keyframe.

3. Without changing the position of the timeline cursor change the width setting first to get the amount of zoom you need.

4. Change the left and top settings to get the section of the image you require.

5. Make a note of the Left, Top and Width settings.

6. Select the next clip and set its Left, Top and Width settings to those you noted.

7. Repeat step 6 if you have further clips you want to have at the same zoom level

8. Select the last clip, at the beginning set the Left, Top and Width as in 6

9. Move the timeline cursor to the point where you want the zoom out to start, insert a keyframe.

10 Move the cursor to the point where you want the zoom out to end and insert another keyframe.

11. Click the Maximise button in the above dialog to go back to full clip size or enter the final Left, Top and Width settings if you want them to be different.

It is quicker and easier to do than read

Note - if you have a lot of clips in between the first and last in the zoom sequence then you can copy the video effects and insert them in the subsequent clips (right click video clip to get options)

Warning - zooming in too far will decrease the quality of the video drastically.

Are you speaking of making a note where they are visually or are you getting X/Y position numbers from somewhere? I cannot find where I can learn that numbers are for the X/Y and Width/Height?

Thank you! I have always had the "Camera/Zoom" text selected. That does make it easier to align things from one clip to the next.

I found a better way of doing this and created a tutorial video and uploaded it to YouTube since it seems others have had the same problem.

That's a good method but if you had more KF's in clip 1 it is probably more elegent to copy and paste the whole effect on to clip 3 and then open the "edit effects curve" box by clicking the upside down triangle to the right of the "Size/Position" effect in the KF controller and click the "mirror" button > about object centre.
