Inserting image

Tom-Borg wrote on 12/11/2025, 3:27 AM

New user, v25, attempt insert in storyboard using ctrl (Win11) and dragging onto sequence a gap opens but not big enough for image so it gets sent to end of sequence. I still struggle to insert on timeline so no help there. Trying to avoid wandering off to Premiere Pro which is more intuitive as I like the ideas in this app. Thx.

@Tom-Borg

Hi

The description of the process you are using appears to be from another video editor. Inserting images in Storyboard mode using drag and drop, with no modifier key such as Ctrl, automatically creates a space for the image to be dropped in as shown below.

Thanks for quick reply John and useful vid. As it happens I got a few d+d inserts on storyboard yesterday then it stopped again. Noticed tip while dragging 'Press Ctrl for further insert/replace options' and that worked on both timeline and storyboard. I am defitinitely using Photostory but don't remember seeing that tip before.This morning drag and drop in timeline shows no insertion point and releasing sometimes partially inserts with overlaps or pushes dropped image to the end as described. It all seems a bit hit and miss, I went over to my Premiere Pro and everything very slick and easy but project assets panel is vastly inferior to Photostory offering. Torn between now. Thanks again.

@Tom-Borg

Hi,

Version 25 is PhotoStory 2026.

The tip while dragging 'Press Ctrl for further insert/replace options' is a new feature in 2026. However, I don't see it in Storyboard mode, only timeline. In Storyboard mode, dragging opens up a space between 2 objects for you to drop at that location, exactly as shown in the video by @johnebaker. There is no hit and miss. In Storyboard mode, each object has the same visible width. Are you seeing something else?

There is no message about using Ctrl in the image below.

In Timeline mode, you see the duration visibly. When you drag an object onto the timeline, as always, no space is opened up. If you drop the object on another object, it will overlay it, creating transitions. To avoid that, we always dragged to another track or inserted space beforehand, or used Storyboard mode which automatically opens up a space.

This new Ctrl feature is great! Wish we had it in VPX and VDL, although we have an insert feature (and many others) that PhotoStory does not. The image below shows the message when Ctrl is not held down and you drag an object from the Media Pool over the timeline.

It has two modes. Watch carefully when you are dragging and holding down Ctrl.

Depending on where the cursor is, the mode changes. If you are away from the edge of an object, the object over which the cursor is will change colour - this is, it gets selected - and the message will say, "Release here to replace the selected object" as shown in the image below.

As you move close to either end of an object, it will no longer be selected, the colour changes to default, and it will say, "Release here to attach the files (the subsequent objects will be shifted backwards" as shown in the image below.

This latter option is like inserting into Storyboard mode, and uses multitrack ripple - anything that track and on other tracks that start at or to the right of the insert point, will be shifted further along the timeline. The insert point is the beginning or end of the object which is closest to the cursor.

Again, there is no hit and miss. The feature does exactly what it says.

Hmmm mysterious here's screenshot of ctrl tip on timeline since when I have had no problems inserting, it was the previous drag and drop that I found veeeery hit and miss. Also puzzled that I had been struggling for a couple of days before the ctrl tip appeared, even though I bought v25 which appears to be 2026 release, perhaps a patch. Anyway am sorted thanks to v25 designers. Currently running PPro and Photostory in parallel to decide which gets the job .... a bit unfair 'cause differences in cost and no doubt designer teams is massive, but latter still gets my vote for assets handling, well done Magix.
