In Powerdirector they have some great video overlay fx and one of them is of falling animated coloured stars.
I image they are plug ins that only PD can read, not avi files.
Does Magix have anything like that, or for that matter any FX other than what comes with the program?

Pro-DAD and New Blue are two creators of various "special FX", at least some of which can be used in VPX. Have you checked out what they offer? Also, within the latest version of VPX you should have effects created by HitFilm; perhaps they produce suitable effects you could look at?
