MAGIX Video deluxe 2026 Premium - time line list

spuddy13 wrote on 3/19/2026, 8:30 AM

can anyone simplify this

i take video from my 4k video camera and also my 4k phone

i then mix and match to make my holiday movie on timeline

i was working on the time line and i noticed for some reason had a dump of clips twice so i visually removed second lot and think i am sorted

i have an in order list from both my sources in windows but i wanted to dump a txt list of my time line to tick off

or audit everything included

can i get a txt list of the clips in order on my timeline without going across the time line and exapanding and manually inspecting every clip

hope you can follow my dilema

any help appreciated

Brian

@spuddy13

If you go to File>Settings>Movie (shortcut E)>Movie Information tab, does that supply what you need?

HI Brian, Jeff

It is a shame that the list obtained cannot be copied or printed.

For large projects I start from the 'other direction', ie get a list of all files, of the appropriate type, ie all images, video and audio before starting a project.

Using a Windows command, cmd, to list all files by name and put them into a text file.

Using a Powershell command, to get all filenames and other parameters eg dates modified, not all cameras set the recording date field, into a text file

In either case you can print the data directly or further process the data in a word processor, spreadsheet or database to get the information in the required format.

I use the PowerShell script method, as I can be using media from multiple cameras and Smart Phones, to get the file name and date modified, followed by further processing in an Access database to give me a report of the files in correct chronological order, most my projects are time based, eg holidays and events, to tell the story as it happened.

Guys,

all sorted

i had looked at the advice from

mmrecs

If you go to File>Settings>Movie (shortcut E)>Movie Information tab, does that supply what you need?

but i was not sure how i tracked this to audit my files on the timeline

so i opted for

johnebakers guidance

i also like John ....before i edit i dump a list of all my files and print it off

so i used my printouts and took the time to scan the time line and tick my list

95% was ok but i had 5 files in the wrong place..

unsure how it happened but its fixed

this was day 3 of a holiday video to Rome

so i checked day two and day one and they were ok

again guys thanks for your time

I love editing with this package and the forum support is one of the best resources

I also go my holidays solo and i love making the films and the edit process that follows

then i share with friends and they comment on the edits (so well done Magix)

take care

Brian

Hi Brian

. . . . i had 5 files in the wrong place unsure how it happened  . . . .

When this occurs to me, it is because I have been holding down the Ctrl key instead of the Shift key when dragging one or more objects on the timeline.

Ctrl + drag = Duplicate selected objects to where ever you release the mouse both vertically and/or horizontally

Shift + drag = Move selected objects maintaining the timeline position ie move vertically up or down.

@spuddy13 , VDLX do not export EDL so no TL info is available.

Hi Brian,

To clarify what @idd-2016 wrote, Video Pro X can export to an EDL file which is a text file that can be opened in Notepad. It contains a listing of the video, photo and audio files used in the Movie, followed by a listing of these assets on each track, along with start and end points. I use the listing to import into my database and to link Projects/Movies to the video, photo and audio files, all of which are in my database.

Hi John

. . . . can export to an EDL file which is a text file that can be opened in Notepad. It contains a listing of the video, photo and audio files used in the Movie, . . .

Which options are you using for the EDL export?

The EDL export dialogue appears to be truncated, this is what I see

Is yours the same?

I tried both the render and handover media options, both have issues:

  • Render takes too long especially with a large project, and does not give the original filenames

  • Handover - does give one text file, extension .edl however there was no information on the video/image/audio in the text file that was produced - this is what I get

Source Table Entries: 7
   1 "C:\Users\Public\Documents\MAGIX\Common\Videocontent\Video Pro X\Default\default.def" VIDEO
   2 "W:\MAGIX\DVD_BD_Projects\AudioTemp\A173A0AE-82C6-4FDF-8822-665B112DCB1A.wav" AUDIO
   3 "C:\Users\Public\Documents\MAGIX\Common\Videocontent\Video Pro X\Default\default.def" VIDEO
   4 "W:\MAGIX\DVD_BD_Projects\AudioTemp\755D3537-EF3C-422A-AFBF-26802BDE7518.wav" AUDIO
   5 "C:\Users\Public\Documents\MAGIX\Common\Videocontent\Video Pro X\Default\default.def" VIDEO
   6 "W:\MAGIX\DVD_BD_Projects\AudioTemp\A6202792-931D-490B-99FA-926CF74D2B26.wav" AUDIO
   7 "W:\Magix\DVD_BD_Projects\Resources\Sound Loops\Stingers\16122_1460558699.wav" AUDIO

As you can see the video uses a default.def file, however the only ones I can find are 'empty', and the audio is not the originals!!!

@idd-2016

Hi

Thanks for the hint, however, that is not what I was asking @browj2.

In my previous post, you will see that I am already in the EDL dialogue and the Video and Audio options panes appear to be truncated.

Does your dialogue show more than is in the image I posted above, ie is there a 3rd option in each pane?

As you can see from the Source Table Entries section of the EDL file created, items 1 to 7 should contain filepaths to either the rendered files, or the real filepaths to the video and audio depending on the method selected.

The Video filepaths are pointing to a file which does not exist in the specified folder location

Note: I am using VPX 17 23.0.1.318 ie the latest update, and I suspect this may be a bug as earlier versions of VPX worked correctly.

Hi

Issue solved, reset of VPX 17 fixed the media links, however there is, IMO, a 'bug' - after using the Render options, then repeating the same sequence of operation ie from top to bottom setting the video/audio options to Handover

On specifying the folder path where the edl, is to be placed

The video and audio options are reset to Render.

What I get from all this is that VDLX manual needs a good shakedown to remove relations to VPX.

OR.... much better if Magix will open the EDL export option in VDLX2026 in the comming update.

browj2 wrote on 3/21/2026, 10:23 AM

@johnebaker

Hi John EB,

You had me worried there. I was wondering what those files were.

I used the handover method; have never used the mixdown. Here is the first part of the EDL file for my latest tutorial on masking, starting from the number of Source Table Entries:

@idd-2016

Yes, there are problems with the VDL manual showing things that are only in VDL. Interestingly, the beginning of the above file indicates that the software is VideoDeluxe when it is actually Video Pro X. At least the version is VPX is correct.

And, my database after importing the movie assets linked to the project. I also have a link to the Word document of the script for the video project.
