No video only sound

Odd-Aagesen wrote on 12/20/2025, 1:47 PM

I have made a project on a win 10 pc and stored on a moveable HDD, when moving the HDD to a win 11pc and opening the project only sound will be played and the videoscreen is black. I can open the same videofile in VLC player and everyting seems to be OK.

What can be the reason that movistudio do not show video picture?

@Odd-Aagesen

Hi

Black video on import is most commonly caused by issues with the graphics card (GPU) drivers or display options settings in the program for hardware acceleration of decoding, processing and export, where possible, by the GPU .

Open the program settings shortcut Y key, select the Device options tab and change the 3 video mode options to CPU, confirming the changes.

If this fixes the display then the issue is with the GPU drivers which should be up-to date for Intel or AMD GPU's,

For Nvidia RTX GPU family check the driver version installed, if it is the latest 591.44 or 591.59 drivers, these should be rolled back to the last driver version of the 581.xx series for your specific GPU. The 591.xx drivers 'broke something' causing issues for several other video editors. This is being looked into by Magix.

If the above does not resolve the issue then we need more information to help diagnose the issue(s) you are having:

The specification of your computer system including Windows version and program version, see this topic for what is required and please quote processor and graphics card make/model in full, and also what monitor/screen resolution(s) you are working with if this is a laptop.

I would suggest you put this information in your profile signature so we do not have to keep asking for it.

Download and install MediaInfo and analyse one of the clips that is showing black and post the results, see this tutorial on how to setup MediaInfo and analyse a video clip for all the data required.

Hi

Thanks for the information.

I agree with @Marc-Goder comment regarding Open DML and playback on a Snapdragon device.

I assume that the Win 10 PC had an intel or AMD CPU, is this correct?

Do note:-

  • Snapdragon ARM processors are not supported for most Magix products, see this topic for more information, and the system requirements for Video deluxe, formerly Magix Movie Studio, here.

  • Some features of the software may not work correctly due to the lack of supported graphics card.

  • Help from other users here in the forum, and support from Magix may be limited, as Snapdragon based systems are relatively new.

I have hundreds of short DV Avi's created with my Sony DV camera and the mediafiles of a few random ones are identical to your mediafile EXCEPT mine for some reason under VIDEO shows Encoder Settings (I don't think this is important) and the Audio is 48.0 kHz and yours is 32.0 kHZ - maybe this is important.

They all load into MS2025 without a problem.

A simple test - open Movie Studio and BEFORE you load the video file, open menu FILE / SETTINGS / PROGRAM / IMPORT-EXPORT and under IMPORT FORMATS untick "AVI Import Module" - don't panic, this will reset itself when you close and reopen Movie Studio.

Load in your video and see if it loads correctly.

Another simple test - Split (demux) the Avi file into it's video and audio components (I use Shutter Encoder to demux files, but Clever FFMPEG or other free programs work just as well) and then load the video portion into Movie Studio.

Does it load correctly?

Hi Andy,

The 32kHz Audio Sample Rate should not be a problem but, as @Marc-Goder and @johnebaker have pointed out, the fact that @Odd-Aagesen has a computer with a Snapdragon CPU is very much the issue here.

I agree with the experts Jeff, I have to as it's all gobbledygook to me. Snapdragon? I never even understood the Pentium 75 I started out with many moons ago.

On very rare occasions when I've had a problem AVI, closing the Magix AVI Import module and using whatever the system uses has allowed me to load it into MEP (not had the problem so far with MS2025)

IAs there was no mention of whether the file opens in VLC or MPC or whatever video player is on his system, I thought it worth a few seconds of his time to try.

Still, stopping the Magix AVI Import may still be worth 10 seconds or so.

Hi

Snapdragon chips are a 'System on a Chip' (SoC) , ie they are CPU, GPU, audio, and other hardware devices, all rolled into one chip with lower power requirements, then for example CPU, GPU and motherboard combinations found in PC's.

They are most commonly found in mobile phones, and tablets, however they are creeping into laptops/notebook as they have a longer battery life. The disadvantage they have, with them being a SoC, is there is no hardware upgrade path available to boost their performance or capabilities by upgrading CPU, graphics card and/or memory, this also applies to some laptops.

Their advantages are low power consumption and efficiency for tasks such as browsing the Internet, word processing and other 'light weight' software roles such as Image editing.

The disadvantages are lack of 'horsepower', for heavy duty tasks such as video editing, limited software compatibility and limited driver avaialbility for some external devices. The latter will improve as more external device manufacturers up their game to match the popularity of ARM based systems.

Thanks for all interest

I have unticked the "input AVI import format" and tried a new download with no success.

There are still black window and the sound is OK.

I can open the avi file in VLC media player with both video and sound, I also tried to open in Windows mediaplayer i got a errormessage the AVI file is coded in DVSD format and can not be opened. The screen is black and sound is OK.

I downloaded the videofile from an Panasonic mini high8 camera tru a firewire connection.

Hi

Please confirm what the Windows 10 pc CPU is - Intel or AMD?

. . . . open the AVI files with windows mediaplayer on a widows 10 computer, no problem everything OK. . . . Odd . . . .

Media Player being able to play the files on the Windows 10 PC only means the PC has the correct codec installed for decoding DV-AVI files with the OpenDML extension to enable playback. The codec may have been installed the first time you played one of the files in Media player, or from any installed Sony software that came with the video camera.

Unfortunately this has no bearing on whether the video editor on the Snapdragon notebook can import or play the AVI file encoding format.

Hi.

As far as I'm aware, that version of Windows that comes with the product is made for Soc type processors, as are those versions of the VLC and Media Player apps. To date, only the Da Vinci Resolve video editor has been adapted to work with Soc chipsets within Windows. Adobe has a beta version of Premier but not all of its add-on effects work.

Apple Mac Minis run a version of an ARM Soc processor and their software and apps are adapted to work with similar Soc hardware but only on their operating system.

I think that for most companies, making software compatible for Soc hardware is just not profitable enough as yet to justify the development costs.

That is why it is important to take note and understand the specifications page of any software one buys so that you have the correct hardware capable of running the program and ensuring full compatibility.
