Nvidia Drivers - Game Ready vs Studio

Greetings,

Over the years I've always used the Game Ready drivers for my Nvidia cards. For the last couple of updates (since I installed VDL2027) I've installed the Studio drivers which, to all intents and purposes, for me seem to be the same.

A couple of days ago I sat with several cups of tea and tried to find a definitive answer as to what the difference is. Most sites seem to use the same blurb as Nvidia that either set of drivers can be used for gaming or video editing.

I did however come across a comment on Reddit that I thought interesting (I copied the text to a file but forgot to get the page address):

The way that GPUs tend to work is to use 'near-enough' calculations. When you're playing a game, it doesn't matter if the occasional calculation is slightly off. You'll never notice if one of the textures is slightly out for a frame or two. But when you're using your GPU for video editing work, suddenly 'near enough' isn't good enough. The Nvidia Studio driver is an attempt to solve this. It forces the GPU to work to a higher accuracy level, giving fewer errors and glitches. It doesn't help with performance though - it makes things slower, but more accurate. You can either use the faster and less accurate Game Ready driver or the slower and more precise Studio driver. The Studio driver is meant for graphic and video professionals, rather than for playing games.

It's unlikely that Magix works directly with Nvidia or AMD. Most software companies don't. And it wouldn't make much difference if they did. Nvidia aren't going to change anything to slightly improve support for a niche video editing application. But Magix (or rather their subcontractors) are free to use Nvidia's SDKs to better improve the way their software interacts with graphics cards and their drivers.

Not definitive but possibly a simple explanation for the difference. I personally can't really see a difference though.

Most odd, I've tried to edit the post to use italics for the quote. The edit is successful until I click on comment when the original appears.

@me_again I don't think there is a difference between Studio and Game Ready, except Game Ready is updated more frequently to solve problems with newly released games. But this high update frequency might introduce more bugs. And the Studio drivers are simply tested more rigorously.

Hi Andy

+1 for @SP.'s summary.

IIRC Magix only test using the GRD drivers.
