Travel Route Animation: MEP 17 v MEP 2014

terrypin wrote on 2/10/2014, 11:38 AM

I'm almost certain that TRA in MEP 17 allowed the use of animated symbols? Like moving boots, wheels, skis, etc. MEP 2014 doesn't have that feature. It appears to use a radically different approach, with 120 variations of the animation object, each angled 3 degrees differently. Its 3D symbol follows the route accurately and smoothly, but doesn't attempt any fancy stuff. Perhaps a good thing  but it's interesting that it was dropped.

BTW, the reason I can't try it is because MEP 17 refuses to load a map. Anyone know a fix?

Hi Terry,

I can confirm that TRA does not work in both MEP17 and MEP MX. They both hang on "Loading map...."

MEP 2013 and 2014 work. When starting TRA, there is a quick message "Testing internet connection" (same with 17 and MX) followed by "Specifying country." Thus something must have changed and the older TRA's no longer find the map. Magix should correct these as there are probably many users with these version. I checked my verson of 17 and I have the latest.

I noticed in the manual MEP17 that "You can select an object to follow the trip route. Besides a pre-selection of objects, e.g. a car or an airplane, you have the option of loading your own subjects. Click the object selection on
load objec
t." This is no longer indicated in the manual, starting with MX. It would be interesting to try to add one but I don't know how this could be done.

As for the animation variations that you mentioned, looking at the files under Geomodule in 17 and 2014, they are quite different. 17 uses GIF's but 2014 uses 120 png's with the object at various angles corresponding to the 3 degrees that you mentioned. Thus 2014 does have this. When the object travels along the route it uses the appropriate png to align the object with the route.

I am working on my replies to you for the other posts about TRA and VdG.

Hi John,

Thus 2014 does have this.

Yes, but as I mentioned it has no actual animation of the object itself, apart from directional motion along the route. In contrast to MEP 17 and your VdeG.

Actually, for many of my intended walk animations, I reckon I won't use any object at all. The flowing line itself is often very effective on its own. Or maybe just a small 2D marker.

Terry,

I didn't get anything in v17TRA like you say. Very rudimentary car that aligns itself to the route.

I will get back to you about VdG. Speaking of which, I recompiled my tutorial video on the weekend (made a couple of improvements to my intro and added RiseShine effect to the text) and submitted it. I was careful to make sure that I selected the Flash Animation and 16:9. It hasn't shown up on the site yet. I hope it works this time.

MEP 17 TRA no longer works properly (after the patch), in fact it's a total mess AFAICS. But here's a crude example I made just now. It seems that you're right in the sense that this facility is not built in, but relies on using the custom option. In this case with a GIF relevant to my purposes (animating walks). I'm vague about how/where I got it but John EB might chip in because we were working on it together.

Yes, it appears that not many people have been posting tutorials.

There is now a Magix competition on for tutorials, but if they cannot even post a tutorial submittal within a few days of then the competition may be a failure. I wonder what is wrong with mine, or is someone on vacation?

I will reply to your other questions about VdG in the other posting.

I contacted MAGIX about the problems with MEP 17. Here is most of the reply:

I'm afraid the TRA feature in the MEP 17 generation is definitely broken for
good. As you may have noticed in the past few years, the TRA feature in the
various versions would always occasionally cause troubles, mostly due to
changes on the end of the online services we are using to implement this
feature. We would then have to react and change our TRA module in the program
again and patch it to address those changes. Somewhere along the line, this
feature broke again, after the last fix we had issued for this that was
applicable to version 17. This will now no longer be patched for that version,
as it's no longer under support. We hope for your understanding.

Hi John,

I think the solution is to go via a PDF.

All of my contributions to the Tutorial section were PDFs, with any linked videos using YT. Even a tutorial which lent itself to being entirely a video was 'embedded' within an introductory PDF, like this example:

http://www.magix.info/us/how-to-create-ken-burns-effects.online-training.858590.html

I'm no fan of the Tutorial section. However if I contributed another today I'd again use PDF, but probably with Dropbox or Vimeo instead of YT for my video links. My videos would be exported from MEP as MP4s, although I'd try John's suggestion of MPGs too.

--------------------

BTW, your earlier comment about a 'tutorial competition' reminded me of the same thing last year, when I had this typically unsatisfactory communication:

http://www.magix.info/uk/create-a-tutorial-and-win-a-magix-coupon.forum.911739.html

I've today done something similar in MEP2014, but although fun it's tedious work.

AFAICR we looked at adding extra objects for the animation route to use instead of the standard ships, planes, cars etc.

I have done very little work with the latest TRA as I 'roll my own' and I have been investigating some useful effects plugins, however that is another topic.

Hi Terry,

On the Here.com site, is there anyway to get it to complete the map? When I zoom out, sometimes it gets the map, but usually I have Here all over except where I was zoomed in. When I go to my island, if I can find it, I can zoom in a lot and it gets the detail, but when I zoom out I see only the part that I had zoomed in on and the rest is white with Here all over it. It doesn't do this all of the time, or at least it didn't, but now it does this most of the time. See below - it never refreshes to give me the entire view:

Maybe a temporary server issue or perhaps a conflict of resources on your PC? No graphics card over-heating possible? (At your location, more likely to be the reverse!)

Good morning,

The sun is shining brightly and the temperature is -3C but supposed to go to a balmy +5 today, before dropping into the deep freeze again on the weekend.

I tried Here.com again with a fresh reboot, and I still have the same problem. My BB Playbook has no trouble so it must be my computer. Why I have no idea.

I am still struggling occasionally with the problem that I described before where MEP skips out of Effects and goes to Import and then does something, like paging out to the HD. I have plenty of memory, 8GB RAM plus 1GB on the video card. It may be time for a cleanup.

I also downloaded Pro X6 trial and managed to crash it. After seemingly opening and viewing my latest long project, X6 did the same thing as MEP, switched from Effects to Import. Clicking on Effects would open the screen and then it would jump back to the Import screen until it had stopped doing whatever it was doing. I can hear a HD working hard. So I guess that it is my machine.

Lastly, my Tutorial was posted again, this time I used a wmv file. Now I can at least see the video but the proportions are wrong, 4:3 instead of 16:9. The file that I sent was definitely 16:9, I just ran it in WMP and the proportions are fine. I may give it one more shot, but this has been very frustrating.

Hi John,

I'd try my PDF suggestion up-thread. Just an introductory sentence with a link to your video.

Or do what I do now, and use the Forum. Not necessarily labelling my work as 'tutorial'.That's reliable and you get to see your contribution immediately. The Tutorials could have been a great resource if only magix.info ahd put some intelligent work into it and responded to user feeback.

Another advantage of using the Forums and/or Q&A is that the contribution is then accessible by the Search tool. In theory so are those in Tutorials, but I just typed 'vasco' as the search term and selected Tutorials from  the drop-down and got 4 results, none in Tutorials.
