VPX16 plays Sony XAVC with no sound

 I was curious to determine if there was an issue with VPX16 since others were able to play the files on previous versions of VPX. Now we know there is no inherent problem with VPX16 as it pertains to this media type.

@Can-Dive I'm not installing K-lite, VPX14 opens both the test files & a ProRes 10bit 422, so does VP22 (MMS 2025 also opens ProRes 10bit 422). I've no interest in updating VPX but your comment is interesting, 'no inherent problem with VPX16' when quite clearly there is, if an older version can open these but a newer version can't I'd call that a problem.

@Gid

Hi Gid.

I can't open file American Pictures 0057.MP4 with sound in VPX14. I don't have the other file but it probably won't load with sound as well. I think you must have an additional codec somewhere or your RTX 3090 SUPRIM may have additional process capabilities my 3060 does not if you don't have additional codecs.

[Edit]

There may be something to maybe another bit of software on your machine may be giving your system the codec needed that I don't have.

I can open Photoshop PSD files and use Nikon NEF raw files in all my video editors but neither format is mentioned in any of the specs for any of the programs. I can also import and use aiff sound files on their own, something Magix said was not supported. What I do have on my machine is supporting software capable of using those file types.

@CubeAce Hi, beyond the Boris fxs which are visual not audio & maybe the Adobe stuff installed I really don't know, sorry all I can do is report what I can.,

This thread is a bit mixed up with no definitive rhyme or reason as yet but I don't think @Can-Dive tagging installing the K-Lite codecs as the solution is a good thing, the correct thing or should i say the responsible thing to do given what I have read over the yrs about the K-lite codec pack. 😒

@Gid

Thanks. Interesting result.

In Vegas I got this pop-up which when accepted allowed the 10 bit video version to be played with sound.

So I thought, 'Maybe now VPX14 will share the codec'. Sort of wrong and sort of correct. ???

I started VPX and tried importing the file and got this.

So something I would have normally had to pay for in VPX gets downloaded for free just because I got Vegas Pro21 for next to nothing from Humble Bundle??? What??? Not complaining and should probably not mention it but What???

I accepted again and the codec was activated. The video played but again without sound.

So there is still the audio part not being seen despite having what one would think was the complete codec.

I can feel my brain melt at this point.

Ray.

Marc, could you give us your GSpot readout? You and I can both play that file but I don't have KLite or Vegas. There must be a common codec, which I have got from another source, which may allow others to open this without resorting ot K-Lite.

All my forum comments are based on or refer to my System 1.

My struggle is over! I built my (now) system 2 in 2011 when DV was king and MPEG 2 was just coming onto the scene and I needed a more powerful system to cope. Since then we've advanced to MP4 and to bigger and bigger resolutions. I was really suffering, not so much in editing (with proxies) but in encoding, which just took ages. A video, with Neat Video noise reduction applied, would encode at 12% of film speed. My new system 1 does the same job at 160% of film speed. Marvellous. I'm keeping my old system as a capture station for analogue video tapes and DV.

For your reference I installed the Standard K-lite pack and not the Mega pack which includes the additional tools, filters and codecs listed by @Marc-Goder.

There appears to be a negative view regarding K-lite. I'm personally indifferent. I never needed it and only installed it now to try and solve this issue. My tests concluded that it provides the functionality to allow VPX/MMS to play the XAVC file with audio. Unless someone can provide another solution or explanation; this is it.

@AAProds, have you ever installed K-lite on any of your computers and then uninstalled it?

CubeAce wrote on 5/13/2025, 1:17 AM

@Can-Dive

K-Lite allows one to just instal specific codecs which in the past before I rebuilt my C: drive I had done when MMS stopped playing MP4 files and it ran for a couple more years without any ill effect with just that imported file.

There are very good reasons why K-Lite receives negative views, try searching other video forums as to why.

I did, several years ago and the resultant issue with the screwing up of existing codec usage by 'taking over' from the existing fully working Windows, and software manufacturer installed, codecs.

Uninstalling required a full clean installation of Windows and software to get rid of it completely.

IMHO the various 'All-in-one' codec packs, that are available, are the 'last resort' option.

Like @Gid, @AAProds I will never install any 'all-in-one' codec packs 'en masse'.

. . . . My tests concluded that it provides the functionality to allow VPX/MMS to play the XAVC file with audio.

Did you install the LAV components only?

@johnebaker @Marc-Goder @AAProds @CubeAce @Gid

Hi Guys,
I think I have determined how/why some of you can play these XAVC files with audio and others can't. While you profess that you have never installed K-lite (and I believe you) you have installed the software that is contained within K-lite.

K-lite is just a fancy container holding an array of video/audio software/codecs etc. And depending on the version you install, you get different stuff.

The basic pack contains the LAV filters. The Standard pack adds a media player to the LAV filters and the list goes on.

@johnebaker had a bad experience with the K-lite package he installed but @Marc-Goder has had no problem with the Mega pack he installed. As Ned Kelly supposably said before they executed him; "Such is life and software."🙂

Unbeknownst to some of you, it's the LAV filters you have installed on your computer which is allowing you to play these XAVC files in VPX/MMS. I know you installed these filters because you admit it yourself in this post from last year.

https://www.magix.info/us/forum/no-audio-for-mov-files--1334554/?page=4#ca1918235

Love or hate K-lite; that's the reason. Of course, you can forego the convenience of K-lite and download the software independently. Here is a link to the LAV filters.

https://www.videohelp.com/software/LAV-Filters

In summary, my objective was to determine if there was a bug in VPX16 based on the fact that I could not play these XAVC files with audio while others could using a previous version (ie @Gid using VPX14). I have concluded that there is nothing wrong with VPX16 in this instance and nothing to report to Magix Support. Currently the software does not support ipcm 24 bit audio. Perhaps it will in the future.

The reason why the editing software can play these files is because of the LAV filters installed on the computer which facilitates this process. These filters can be installed in a variety of ways, either independently, a media player or through a package like K-lite.

Thanks for everyone's help! I could not have done it without you! I really appreciate your time and commitment. I think we all learned something from this testing process or at least I did. 🤓

In my defence, how was I to know K-Lite included the LAV filters/decoders? And I did say earlier that I had some other "freebees" installed. 😉👍

What would be good would be to know which actual filter will allow a particular file type to be opened. I'd completely forgotten about the LAV Filter messing up Lagarith files in Magix so there are obviously dodgy decoders in that pack. However, it would be good to have "some" enabled, as in this Sony XAVC case.

Hi @AAProds,

I will be the first to admit I'm not an expert. I agree it would be good to know exactly how these filters work.

In reality, K-Lite is really just a fancy zip file full of tools. Of course, if you don't know how to use them, you could get into trouble. Each K-Lite pack has a content list on their website. Here is the link for the "Mega" pack.

https://codecguide.com/features_mega.htm

With your experience in analog to digital conversion, I suspect you already know and have used/experimented with most of these "freebees" in your quest for maximum quality. I'm sure most, if not all, can be found separately in VideoHelp's software page which I am certain you are very familiar with the Forum.

Regarding your Lagarith problem, what did you do to solve the issue, uninstall the filters? The LAV filters do have a portable version so that may be a good alternative for those who want to experiment with them but not necessarily install them permanently on their system.

Cheers and thanks again for your input!

Another thing I learned today regarding the LAV filters. We know it converts the ipcm 24 bit audio into 16 bit so that VPX/MMS can play it. As part of my testing, I wanted to ensure it was the LAV filters that were causing this so I uninstalled the program. To my surprise the files continued to play with audio! Was there something else that was doing this?

What I eventually discovered is that the system actually saves the 16 bit WAV file in:

\Documents\MAGIX\Video Pro X16\AudioTemp\

(and the MMS equivalent)

So when the video is subsequently played, it uses this WAV file regardless if the LAV filters are turned on or off. Of course the LAV filters have to be active for any new video file played so that it can generate the 16 bit WAV file.

Trick for young players. 🤓

Correct, this folder is where VPX, Movie Edit Pro and Movie Studio, going back over 15+ years, manage many audio file formats by conversion to wav as proxies into this folder. Additionally you may also find two 'support files' .HDP, which contains information about the audio file, and the .H0 file which contains the graphical waveform representation of the audio.

IMO it is wise to perform regular maintenance on this folder, deleting those files not related to the current project, they will be recreated if you go back to the projects that they were created for or use in other projects, the folder size can grow very large quickly.

It is unfortunate that the manual(s) do not give any meaningful information on the AudioTemp folders and some others, usage and maintenance.

Hi @johnebaker,

Thank you for providing the history relating to this audio temp folder. You must be a mind reader because these were the questions I had when I found the folder. I didn't pay much attention to it before and was surprised to see how many files had actually accumulated!

I am aware that VPX/MMS has a cleanup wizard and I have been making personal notes; trying to understand its logic. To say the least, my definition of superfluous files is a bit different to those it sometimes chooses. I'm a bit reluctant to use it at this stage in fear I might inadvertently delete something important! But my questions regarding the cleanup wizard is for another post and another day.

I think this post can be closed unless someone has questions regarding the LAV filters or can share their experience using them.

I gotta get to bed!😴
