Why is this displayed wrongly?

terrypin wrote on 8/26/2011, 5:36 AM

To highlight a small section of a map I made this 320 x 270 pixel JPG.

(Which, BTW, is itself being displayed incorrectly here! Its LH edge should be same width as elsewhere. Some problem with the site? I'll show the next image using a link instead.)

But when used in MEP17 it appeared with no top edge and a very thin bottom edge, as shown:

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/4019461/MEP-Sizing-1.jpg

That remains the case whatever size and proportions are used.

It's no big deal, as I can easily achieve the same result using a much larger version of the same image. But it looks like a bug to me, arising only when images are below some minimum size. If so, it might have other more subtle consequences.

Hi Terry,

I don't seem to be able to reproduce this issue here. Does the problem with the incomplete display of the rectangle happen right away after importing it and turning on the chroma keying? Did you possibly accidentally use the "section" effect to crop the visible part of the image, rather than just using size/position to position and resize it?

If you remove the object from your timeline again and re-import it, can you repeat the problem? I suppose your steps would look something like this:

1.) Drag rectangle frame from the mediapool into the timeline and select it.

2.) Go to the "Effects" tab in the mediapool and turn on chroma keying for black.

3.) Switch to size/position effect to move and resize the image in the video monitor according to your needs.

At what step does the problem show up?

cheers, Ralf

(BTW, issue with the embedded image in your post being cropped will be looked into. I don't think this is intended. Obviously, the problem is more prominent with some images than with others.)

Hi Ralf,

It shows up immediately, i.e. as soon as the small rectangle image is imported. Here it is directly after doing that and applying Chroma key = Black:

Hi Terry

I have tried to replicate your problem with no success.

What aspect ratio, dimensions and pixel/inch (or cm) settings do you use to create the image?

When you save the image do you save as standard jpg or jpeg 2000 format and what compression options do you use?

John

Hi John, and thanks for getting on the case.

I think your'e definitely onto something with your question about settings, although I don't yet understand what's going on. I'll provide more info later (I'm shortly heading away from my PC) but here's a screenshot attempting to show the inconsistent results I just got with 3 more images. Of the total of 4 (including the original from my first post), #1 and #4 display correctly, #2 and # 3 don't.

I make images in either IrfanView or PaintShop Pro 8. Never before given any attention to DPI or print size, only pixel size. Looking at IrfanView - Image Propeties I see

I'll edit or supplement this later.

I forgot, magix.info won't let me edit that last reply! So here's more info.

I tried changing the DPI of a new JPG in PSP8 but it made no difference. Here's another image file you might want to download and try in MEP. On my PC it displays wrongly.

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/4019461/RedOnGreen-Small-PSP8-96.jpg

That was made with PSP8 set to 96 pixels per cm. Another version of same 100x100 image made in PSP8 with the setting at 300 pixels per cm (its usual value in the past) also displayed wrongly, so I don't think that's the issue. But this DPI and pixes per cm stuff has always been a bit obscure to me anyway!

Sorted!

What a %*!'*!^!@ I am. It was all down to the fact that I have this setting enabled!

Hi Terry

Can't remember ever seeing that setting - then again I set all my standard settings once and then leave them.  In case you are wondering my movie settings are always for 1920*1080 25fps (sometimes 50fps) and all others set at default.

From this I edit in HD and let MEP take care of conversion to standard DVD on the burn get excellent quaility that way.

So I make movie once and then burn anything I like letting MEP take care of conversions, resizing etc.
